You can't Let the finesse and style on you the whole game

Which teams will send thaat message?

Especially when they set those cute pick rolls

McFilthy and McNasty no longer exist. Today's players are too worried about getting fined and ejected.

Well Dwight is one we can agree on. He's just not that skilled a big man & clearly isn't very mentally tough. Steph on the other hand is very skilled & is arguably the best shooter ever. Ball & rim are still the same size

This is from an article addressing Kobe's point that the nba has become more of a finesse game.

In the late ’80s, NBA play would evolve, and honestly, to me, the late ’80s and mid ’90s basketball was the best basketball for my liking. Everyone may not agree, but it was fun to watch the defenses adapt to try and stop play makers from making plays. Detroit instituted the Jordan rules that would force the NBA’s hand on how games would be called.

The hand check was the equalizer to the new super athletes. The shooters very rarely got a chance to square up perfectly and shoot because someone was always engaged on the shooter. When you see highlights of guys like Larry Bird, Dominique Wilkins and even Michael Jordan, you see guys shooting with their bodies moving at an angle to create space. Today’s jump shooters don’t have to endure that. Watch Dirk Nowitzki shoot. His body is almost always perfectly square unless he is shooting the one-legged fall-away that he shoots. Most cases, you can draw lines on his body because he is perfectly square.

Today’s NBA players don’t have to endure the bumping and physicality that other greats had to deal with. I’m pretty sure Magic Johnson would be a headache at point guard in today’s NBA. He would practically live at the free throw line because there is no way the smaller NBA guards would be able to stop him from backing down without the ability to push.

I'm not denying that the game was more physical. That's an absolute fact. But the argument assumes these guys wouldn't adjust. It's pretty convenient to just say what these guys would do in a game with different rules. Just like if you just threw Jordan in a game today with no hand checking he'd almost certainly foul out because that's not how he was taught to play defense. Change the rules up on guys & of course they'd struggle off the bat. Whether or not they'd have successful careers is way more complex

Stop with these what if scenarios.. They don't mean shyt Marty Mcfly.. It's 2015 not 1980.

To truly determine a players worth you must compare across eras. It's compulsory. How else do you determine who the greatest players are ever?

That's fine, it's a completely different era tho, you can't say what would happen if Steph and klay played back then, just like you don't know what would've happened if stars from those days played today with all the rule changes n what not... It's an intangible. We will never kno so why speculate ?

There is tangible evidence, confirmed by almost every poster, that the game was far more physical in 80s and 90s. All the cutesy finesse shyt done today wouldnt fly. That's fact. Now, @TheyCallMeAzul made a good point about adjustments. They may or may not. I personally dont believe they would adjust and be as effective. I dont care if u dont agree with me about steph and klay. We can agree to disagree but i would really question your bball knowledge if u deny the nature of the game back then. Another poster also agreed that Dwight Howard would not last as big man during this era. That's not speculation rather a calculated ability to assess his game today along with his mentality when compared to the Hakeem, Shaq, D Rob and Ewings of that era. Feel me?

Breh I'm not debating whether the game was more physical back then.. That's a given.
