Unfortunately what it seems, reading hacknernews, most ipos are now just hot potato. All the VC money that built up a company can now exit and leave it with the public. If they are smart they will just do stock buybacks rather than innovate or spurn a lot of research.
Most of the Taiwan issue surrounding TSMC is because Apple rather would outsource it chips instead of producing them in house. This lead to the creation of TSMC and thusly a geopolitical crisis.
There really isn't much of an opportunity for growth past a certain point.
I haven't read much econ theory to see what this is like but it seems like most firms past a certain point exist at the level of infrastructure, once they get to that point they should be nationalized. This is somewhat like the "obamaphone" but writ large. When companies are subsidies in a Too big to fail capacity, it's private companies being now the middlemen, preventing expansion of the infrastructure or resources a service can provide so they can extract profits that exist at the point between their cost and their subsidies.
Like I said I'm a trained biologist so I'm not making necessarily an argument but pointing out some observations.

I fully agree with the above. What I find funny is ask a libertarian the best examples of Free Market Capitalism and they typically point to the US during the gilded age, yet back then there was even greater wealth disparity than today, and the rich hired goons like the Pinkertons to physically fight and intimidate workers/unions.The biggest problem with "capitalism" is that nobody ever practices it....but acts like it's the best system ever.
Because all the biggest proponents of "capitalism" beg their governments for money to cover their risks and failures.
The people subsidize the health insurance industry. The automobile industry. The banking industry. The housing industry. The professional sports industry.
Everything.
So anyone who wants to sit here and ask "what system is better?"....first answer me why everyone ALWAYS socializes the risks and privatizes the profits? Because in a capitalistic system, this would never happen.
