Kendrick didn’t come out the gate with GKMC and start receiving acclaim. I remember listening to OD back in 2010, it was cool, not my fav album of the year or anything but dope. I was already a fan of Ab Soul and Kendrick would always be on my fav songs like Moscato or Say Wussup off Jay Rocks album so that’s why I went back and checked out Section80 as well.
Don't get me wrong - it's not a terrible song. Just doesn't do anything for me. It's too low-energy for your typical Rocky song. Rocky's beats tend to go harder, even when they're on the mellow side. But it's a decent tune and Rocky delivers great vocals as usual

The reality is that no new cat has learned anything artistic from Kendrick nor is inspired by his music. What they've learned is that marketing is 100% the name of the game. With an appealing look and narrative, all you need is the label to turn on 'the button'.

I agree to an extent, because I'll see posts on here immediately calling a basic verse/song/album Great, when it really isn't. It feels like a lot of people really want to just feel involved in witnessing greatness, so they tend to overhype shyt. But, Kendrick was already getting a buzz from Overly Dedicated, specifically Ignorance is Bliss. Then he dropped S.80 and got the Drake stimulus, it was pretty much destined by that point.
As for Cardi, she's being promoted like any popping artist should. I'm skeptical because Atlantic tends to fukk things up, but chicks love Cardi, and she makes songs that are easy enough to sing-along in the club, for the gram. Ain't nobody calling her a GOAT or anything, and if they are, nobody is taking that opinion seriously anyway. She's being promoted as she should, ain't no chick really dominating that lane like she is. Nicki not responding to shether and just making oddball moves all year, gave Cardi B an easy lane to takeover. And we're only talking about her music, she already had a strong social media presence that ended up getting her a TV show gig.
Drake and Bhris dropped albums/"playlists" and people were bytching about it being too much, but they still ended up with high ass streaming numbers. That's just the how the streaming rules are set-up now, and rest-assured it isn't just labels abusing it.

I agree with your post overall, breh. I'm just curious where the buzz for OD was. Like I said, I can barely find a review of that shyt anywhere prior to 2011. Which is odd for someone that's supposedly buzzing.

hasn't cardi been releasing music for like 2+ years now? plus I remember seeing her page way back in 2016 and she already had millions of followers who loved her IG rants and shyt (esp female followers). its not like she came outta nowhere dropping music. her initial music all flopped but she still had a core fanbase because of her IG videos. Bodak Yellow was just such a big hit that now shes got everyone's attention and is just building off of that hype.
i remember watching her interview on everyday struggle last June at the BET awards and she was saying something similar like she's been dropping songs, but nothing is hitting, but she was hoping Bodak Yellow would be the one (it had just been out for like a week at that point). crazy how like 7 months later shes one of the hottest rappers out now
