Yeah there's not much of a difference. Drake's comeup was always iffy to me. At the time, I thought he was a handpicked pop star for a pop audience. I remember "Best I Ever Had" being played everywhere and there was talk he wasn't even signed, which I thought was obviously bullshyt. I think 50 made a comment about that.

I'm lenient on Drake now because a) he leveled the fukk up - his improvement since then has been crazy and b) he's never claimed to be real hip hop like that. His team isn't lying about him dropping Illmatics every time. He's just a guy who wants to play both sides of the fence (pop and hip hop).

Getting cosigned from Wayne is HUGE, but being the golden boy of an entire coast and Interscope is something else entirely.

Borderline trash.

So here's the thing - I liked HiiPower. I thought it was decent. One of the best beats J Cole had ever done (and I think it's still a top 5 Cole beat). I remember joking to a friend that the new Cole had arrived, and that if J Cole wasn't careful, Kendrick would take his trap like Future did T-Pain. Kendrick sounded a bit dull but his opening line was stronger than anything I'd ever heard from Cole. So basically, he was an LA hood J Cole to me.

Then Section80 dropped. I listened to it and was like "What is this grooveless, wannabe Outkast trash?" I thought the melody for Keisha's Song was the clear standout (aside from HiiPower) but even the song overall was corny and forced.

I didn't mind, though. The few hip hop fans around me were excited that there was a new spitter on the scene. A cac acquaintance of mine absolutely loved Kendrick from the get-go. He would always talk about ADHD being the shyt. I didn't get it but

The shyt that started to turn me the fukk off from Kendrick was the run-up to GKMC being released. The media started pushing that shyt so hard before it even came out, hinting that it's gonna be classic. So of course the sheep stanleys decided shyt was classic even before release.

In hindsight, Sec 80 is a little better than I gave it credit for but it's still sleepy time at the Apollo. I totally slept on Poe Man's Dreams. Good beat. One of the few Kendrick beats I actually like.
