Ministry of Agriculture Celebrates Resa B. Nelson as Antigua and Barbuda’s Newest Rhodes Scholar

WhatsApp-Image-2025-11-19-at-12.41.01-PM.jpeg

The Ministry of Agriculture has extended warm congratulations to Resa B. Nelson, the country’s newest Rhodes Scholar, recognizing her as a trailblazing young scientist whose work is shaping innovation in the Caribbean.

Nelson’s journey from Antigua and Barbuda to Hofstra University and now to the University of Oxford reflects her dedication, academic excellence, and fearless curiosity. Her research, which focuses on turning sargassum into renewable energy and other value-added products, is a groundbreaking example of how science and environmental stewardship can intersect with sustainable development.

While her work may not fall under traditional agriculture, the Ministry noted that it aligns closely with Antigua and Barbuda’s broader goals in agro-processing, environmental innovation, and the transformation of natural resources into economic opportunities

Resa represents the best of the nation’s youth: focused, self-driven, unafraid to tackle complex problems, and committed to solutions that benefit communities far beyond herself.

Her achievement underscores the potential of Caribbean youth to lead on global stages through original research and regionally centered innovation. The Ministry of Agriculture emphasized that Nelson’s success serves as a reminder that the future of science, environmental management, and sustainable industries in Antigua and Barbuda will be shaped by bright minds like hers.

Officials expressed pride in Nelson’s accomplishment and optimism that her work will continue to inspire the next generation of Antiguan and Barbudan innovators.

Ben’s Bowl at Dōgon

Washington, D.C.

The chef Kwame Onwuachi is known for bringing a sense of place to the plate that goes beyond ingredients to plumb into history and how a city shapes its people. Here he tips his hat to Ben Ali, the Trinidad-born founder of Ben’s Chili Bowl, a chain that got its start on U Street in 1958 serving half-smokes draped in chili. In Mr. Onwuachi’s homage, lamb shoulder is braised past resistance in a crush of curry spices and chicken stock, then picked warm and whipped until the fats turn to velvet. Flattened and crisped, it’s an astonishment of density and richness. ($32) LIGAYA MISHAN

Belize Builds Caribbean’s First Sugar Refinery

Belize Builds Caribbean’s First Sugar Refinery

Construction of the Caribbean’s first sugar refinery is well on its way and with it Belize is set to take a major step up the regional sugar value chain. A forty-million-dollar investment by U.S. based SUCRO Sourcing is being channeled through Santander Sugar to establish the Caribbean Sugar Refinery, a project that is already under construction and expected to become operational by April 2026. Once completed, the refinery will allow Belize to move beyond exporting primarily raw sugar, plantation white and brown and into the production of refined sugar, a product that Belize and several CARICOM states currently import. The investment agreement materialized during the Belize Investment Summit and was endorsed by CARICOM, through its Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED). It boosts regional production, value-added manufacturing and reduced dependence on extra-regional imports

A fascinating look at how coffee tied the economic future of the early United States to the wider Atlantic world

Coffee is among the most common goods traded and consumed worldwide, and so omnipresent its popularity is often taken for granted. But even everyday habits have a history. When and why coffee become part of North American daily life is at the center of Coffee Nation. Using a wide range of archival, quantitative, and material evidence, Michelle Craig McDonald follows coffee from the slavery-based plantations of the Caribbean and South America, through the balance sheets of Atlantic world merchants, into the coffeehouses, stores, and homes of colonial North Americans, and ultimately to the growing import/export businesses of the early nineteenth-century United States that rebranded this exotic good as an American staple. The result is a sweeping history that explores how coffee shaped the lives of enslaved laborers and farmers, merchants and retailers, consumers and advertisers.

Coffee Nation also challenges traditional interpretations of the American Revolution, as coffee’s spectacular profitability in US markets and popularity on the new nation’s tables by the mid-nineteenth century was the antithesis of independence. From its beginnings as a colonial commodity in the early eighteenth century, coffee’s popularity soared to become a leading global economy by the 1830s. The United States dominated this growth, by importing ever-increasing amounts of the commodity for drinkers at home and developing a lucrative re-export trade to buyers overseas. But while income generated from coffee sales made up an expanding portion of US trade revenue, the market always depended on reliable access to a commodity that the nation could not grow for itself. By any measure, the coffee industry was a financial success story, but one that runs counter to the dominant narrative of national autonomy. Distribution, not production, lay at the heart of North America’s coffee business, and its profitability and expansion relied on securing and maintaining ties first with the Caribbean and then Latin America.
