Vespera, a smart telescope to make astrophotography easier, nabs CES 2021 Innovation Award

A new smart telescope from Vaonis is about to make astrophotography more accessible than ever.

Vaonis, a French startup that raised eyebrows in 2018 when it debuted the pricey, sci-fi robot-looking Stellina smart telescope, has revealed its latest newbie-friendly astrophotography invention: Vespera, a smaller, lighter and more affordable version of Stellina. This week, Vespera received the CES 2021 Best of Innovation Award for digital imaging and photography at the annual Consumer Electronics Show.

"Vespera is an amazing next step for Vaonis. It will take their amazing technology that allows anyone to observe deep-sky objects like galaxies and nebulas and make it accessible and affordable for everyone," former NASA Astronaut and Vaonis ambassador Terry Virts said in a statement emailed to Space.com.

In lieu of an eyepiece, both Vespera and Stellina display images on a mobile device, and the telescopes are controlled via a mobile app. Because they use your smartphone's GPS to calibrate themselves, these telescopes require virtually no setup at all, making them easy to use for casual stargazers looking for a hassle-free way to see deep-space objects like nebulas, galaxies and star clusters.

Vespera (a name that means "evening" in Latin) has the same sleek, futuristic design as its larger counterpart, but it's more compact and less than half the weight. It stands 15 inches (40 centimeters) tall, just 4 inches (9 cm) shorter than Stellina.

Both Vespera and Stellina use refractor lenses, but Vespera has a smaller aperture of 3 inches (50 mm) and focal ratio of f/4, compared to Stellina's 3-inch (80 mm) f/5 aperture. The image resolution is also slightly reduced, with 2 megapixels as opposed to Stellina's 6.4 megapixels.

While Vespera does compromise some of its capabilities for the smaller, more affordable design, the image quality is still pretty decent compared to Stellina's images. While it may not be suited for professional astrophotography, Vespera offers pretty nice views of the night sky.

Vespera is currently available for preorder at $1,499, or about one-third the hefty price of Stellina, which costs $4,999. Vaonis expects to start shipping Vesperas in the spring of 2022. The smart telescope raised more than $2.5 million on Kickstarter in 2020.

AirPop Active+ Halo Smart Mask

airpop-active-plus-670px.jpg

The COVID-19 pandemic is still top of mind as we peruse the virtual booths of CES, so it is no surprise there are new products on display that make the masks we’ve all become so accustomed to wearing smarter. And our favorite was the AirPop Active+ Halo Smart Mask.

The Active+ Halo has a built-in sensor that measures outdoor air quality, as well as your own breathing, to provide helpful health and fitness insights. In conjunction with the companion app, the Active+ will let you know how much external pollution you’ve been exposed to and how long before you’ll need to change your filter, which typically has about 40 hours of life. It also tracks your breathing and offers insights into your respiratory patterns, such as breaths per minute while working out, which can be shared and combined with other health data via Apple HealthKit. The sensor connects to your device through Bluetooth, with a coin-cell battery that lasts around six months before needing replacement.

The Active+ Halo mask has a medical-grade soft touch membrane and offers a full seal (though we haven’t had a chance to try it on ourselves). The replaceable filters block particles down to 0.3μ with a filtration efficiency over ninety-nine percent (99.3%).

The smart mask has useful features beyond COVID protection. It can be used to filter out poor air quality if you live near wildfire areas, something we saw a lot of last year.

The AirPop Active+ Halo Smart Mask will cost $149.99 and come with four filters when it hits stores in Q1 2021.

Toto Wellness Toilet

Experiencing digestive distress? In the future, your toilet might be able to help. The Toto Wellness Toilet examines your stool to determine whether you're healthy. Its companion app then offers recommended dietary changes to improve your digestion. It's just a concept at this point, but it could hit the consumer market in the next few years.

Panasonic nanoe EH-NA67-W Hair Dryer
panasonic-eh-na67-w-670px.jpg

Panasonic has finally made the hair dryer essentially dummy-proof with its nanoe EH-NA67-W Hair Dryer. Those who dry their hair frequently know they should keep the hair dryer in-motion. But all too frequently, we become distracted and end up leaving the dryer in one spot too long, overheating our hair (and sometimes our scalp) and damaging it. The solution is simple and elegant – an oscillating quick-dry nozzle that more evenly distributes the air, preventing hot spots. No more wearing out your wrists to get the perfect blowout.

The nanoe EH-NA67-W also uses Panasonic’s patented nanoe technology to pull moisture from the air and blow it back into your hair to help dry your hair without drying it out. The hair dryer has three temperature settings and two speeds, and concentrator nozzle and diffuser are included. The nanoe EH-NA67-W will be available later this month on Amazon for $150.

Alarm.com Flex IO

flexio-670px.jpg

It’s a common problem – you have areas of your property you want to secure – gates, a shed, your garage, pricey lawn equipment, or even a chicken coop – but they’re too far away from your home to get a WiFi signal. The new Flex IO from Alarm.com is the perfect solution to protecting your entire property, without the need to run expensive wires.

The Flex IO is a weatherproofed sensor that can be attached to a door, gate or almost anything that opens and closes, and is the first sensor of its kind to use cellular LTE-M, allowing it to communicate alerts to Alarm.com from almost anywhere a cellular signal is available (AT&T and Verizon, for now). And with optional magnetic loops in lengths of up to 70 feet, the Flex IO can also be used to secure expensive equipment, such as riding mowers, motorcycles, or boats. Inside, the Flex IO is powered by four replaceable Lithium-ion batteries that can last up to two years.

The Alarm.com app allows you to set up various alerts (e.g., when a door is opened or a gate is left open) and notifications methods (text, phone, email). It can be incorporated into your home’s existing Alarm.comsystem, or even used as a simple standalone alarm on the front door of a vacation cabin or apartment.

The Flex IO is available through Alarm.com partnersfor $130, with a $10-15 per month cellular service fee.

TP-Link Deco X96 AX7800 Whole Home Mesh Wi-Fi 6E System
tp-link-deco-x96-670px.jpg

The TP-Link Deco X96 AX7800 Whole Home Mesh Wi-Fi 6E System is one of the first announced at CES to include the newly-certified WiFi 6E standard. While standard WiFi uses 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies to provide a wireless internet connection to your devices, WiFi 6E also uses 6GHz frequencies, which the FCC opened available for consumer usage last June. The 6GHz WiFi band is essentially empty, and is comprised of up to seven super-wide channels, which means you'll get faster connections with lower latency when connected to compatible WiFi 6E wireless devices, which will make online gamers who rely on instant reactions happy, and reduce video buffering.

What we really like about the TP-Link solution is that the Deco X96 Wi-Fi 6E mesh system can connect up to 200 devices without dragging down performance, and the company's premium HomeShield security service scans and identifies these connected devices, blocks malicious URLs or other potential threats, fixes network vulnerabilities, and prevents malicious internet connectivity attacks – it is a complete IoT connection and security solution. At press time, there was no word on price, and availability is expected to be later this year.

Sweet-Spot Qi Wireless Charger

Ever notice how sometimes when you toss your phone onto your car's Qi wireless charger, it doesn't always start charging (or maybe it gets hot but charges slowly)? That's often because the ideal spot on your phone for picking up inductive charging hasn't aligned ideally with the coil on the pad. Panasonic seeks to fix this problem with a moving coil that roves around under the surface of the pad to locate your phone's sweet spot and commence charging at the fastest, most efficient location generating the least amount of waste heat possible.

Using Toll Tags To Buy Gas, Pay For Parking

New cars are gradually incorporating Integrated Toll Module devices into their windshield mirror assemblies, and now ITM supplier Gentex is working with PayByCar to enable contactless in-vehicle payment of other products and services like gas and parking. Pulling into a gas station, your car will be identified and your phone will get a message asking which pump you're pulling up to, what grade of gas you want. After that, the system will then authorize that pump and automatically charge your preferred method of payment.

The program is just rolling out at gas stations on the East Coast.

Smoke/Vape/Chemical Weapons Detector

Zeeland, Michigan-based supplier Gentex started out in the smoke detector business and recently acquired Utah-based startup Vaporsens to double down on that area of expertise. The plan is to incorporate a new nanofiber technology developed by Vaporsens that employs a mesh net of nanofibers about 1/1,000th the size of a human hair. The fibers themselves are porous enough to absorb targeted molecules and identify them via subtle changes in electrical resistance. By incorporating such technology in the HVAC system or in overhead console sensors, a shared vehicle or robotaxi could narc on scofflaws who smoke or vape in a vehicle or potentially sense more dangerous substances brought into or left behind in a vehicle. In either case they could trigger Gentex-supplied driver monitoring and cabin sensing cameras to capture images of the perps.

META NanoWeb See-Through 5G Antenna

With the increasing popularity of hood-to-trunk glass windshield/roof/backlight designs, the problem of where to put an antenna arises. Here's a handy solution: A see-through antenna. The magic that allows this nearly transparent antenna to work virtually as well as a metal one is its highly transparent metal mesh, which marks a huge improvement over previous metallic films like indium tin oxide (sometimes used in windshield defrosters). Optical transmission is up to 98 percent with no color tinting and minimal haze (less than one percent). It's designed to receive frequencies from 400 MHz to 92 GHz (4G, 5G, XM Radio, etc. ).

Kew Labs’ 30-watt UTS-1 adds wireless charging to nonmetallic surfaces that are no more than an inch thick.

PHOTO: KEW LABS

A hidden wireless Qi charger, called UTS-1, can be mounted to the underside of a nonmetallic surface using the included tape. Plug it into the wall, and you’ve just added wireless charging to your furniture. It keeps your desk tidy and prevents your housemates from stealing your charger.

Kew Labs, the company behind the product, claims the 30-watt charger can beam power through tables and nightstands up to an inch thick. It patented a method to ensure safety and efficiency over the relatively long distance. (With wireless charging, alignment and proximity are typically key. Even a bulky case can interfere with proper charging.) The UTS-1 retails for $105 on Kew Labs’ website.

Level Touch is a smart deadbolt with phone-sensing near-field communications (NFC) technology, the same powering contactless payments at the grocery store. As long as your phone is on your person, a simple touch of your finger unlocks or locks the door. Alternatively, you can tap your phone or a registered keycard—like the kind you get at hotels—to the deadbolt.

The $329 system doesn’t have a Wi-Fi antenna, which in this case is a perk rather than a flaw. Low-power NFC tech means you don’t have to worry about the battery for a year. (Other smart locks, like August, need battery replacement every three to six months.) When there’s no power, a plain ol’ key works, too.
