Beltless Fetal Monitoring

Phillips

When you're in labor, one of the last things you want to deal with is wires and cords wrapped around your burgeoning belly. At CES, Phillips announced its innovative Avalon beltless fetal monitor, which uses cable-less transductors that adhere to your belly instead of a wrap-around band to monitor your baby's vitals effortlessly during labor. Goodbye forever, tangled cords on a stretchy belt!

Currently, the Avalon is only available through the Phillips website for registered health care professionals and medical product distributors.

BONA Robot

The BV332AL-self-cleaning LDS robot vacuum cleaner by BONA uses an artificial intelligence camera with 360-degree scanning capabilities to navigate your home as it cleans, avoiding obstacles with ease. Instead of taking the time to empty and wipe out an entire dust bin, this vacuum is self-cleaning, dropping all collected dust and debris into a recyclable bag located within its docking station.

The release date and price point for this product have yet to be announced.

iMedSync

A helmet that detects Alzheimer's dementia

An electroencephalogram (or EEG) is used in doctor's offices and hospitals to detect electrical activity in your brain to diagnose all sorts of neurological disorders, such as epilepsy and dementia.

iSyncWave brings that process home with a portable brain-mapping helmet that can detect early signs of Alzheimer's dementia and provides LED therapy for dementia, Parkinson's disease, PTSD, ADHD, depression and other neurological issues.

Unlike traditional EEGs, which require adhesive electrode patches attached to your scalp or electrode helmets filled with gel, iSyncWave is supposed to just sit on top of your head and doesn't require gel.

iSyncWave is still being developed, so it'll be a while before you can purchase this for yourself.

Omron is trying to make it easier than ever before to take your blood pressure at home and send that data to your doctor. The company's new Omron VitalSight kit comes with a blood pressure cuff, scale and a secure modem-equipped data hub that automatically uploads your blood pressure readings to your doctor.

Nobi

A lamp that calls for help if you fall

First there were Life Alert necklaces, then there was the Apple Watch and now, there's an overhead lamp that detects when you or a loved one falls and needs help. The Nobi lamp is full of sensors that know if you're lying in bed, sitting on the couch or have fallen down.

If it detects a fall, the lamp will ask if you need assistance. If you don't reply, it will send alerts to family or caregivers and the two-way mic allows you to communicate with the person who needs help.

The lamp has more features than I have room to describe here, so check out all of the details of Nobi in our write up.

A Sonicare toothbrush that knows how well you clean

Today's electric toothbrushes do far more than just clean your teeth -- they actually know how well you're brushing. At CES 2021, Philips launched the Sonicare Prestige 9900 toothbrush with sensors that detect how much pressure you apply while brushing, the movements you make with the brush and how well you actually clean each part of your mouth.

If you push a bit too hard while brushing (which can irritate your gums and make your teeth sensitive), the brush automatically adjusts the intensity of the vibrations to compensate.

And what smart toothbrush would be complete without an app? The Prestige syncs with the Sonicare app to give you real-time guidance as you brush.

You'll be able to buy the brush in April 2021, pricing is to be announced.

More TVs with NextGen tuners will be available soon

insitu-65a90j-02-large.jpg

All of the 2021 TVs Sony announced at CES, including this A90J OLED, will have NextGen tuners built-in.

If you're in the market for a new TV there are a bunch that have built-in NextGenTV tuners. The below list is a mix of upcoming 2021 and 2020 models that are likely still available. Expect more to be announced in 2021.

LG: 55-, 65-, and 77GX, 65WX, 77- and 88ZX. For 2021 LG has announced their 55- to 88-inch 4K and 8K evo OLEDs will all have NextGen tuners.

Samsung: Q800T, Q850T, Q900TS, and Q950TS. Samsung hasn't made specific announcements for 2021 models, but it's safe to assume their 8K TVs will again have NextGen tuners, and possibly their higher-end QLEDs as well.

Sony: X900H, 55-, 65- 75-, and 85X90, as well as all 2021 models.

You can buy a standalone ATSC 3.0 tuner now, with more on the way

You don't need a new TV for NextGenTV, but you'll at least need a tuner to receive the signals.

Right now you can buy the HDHomeRun Connect 4K ($200, which converts to about £150 or AU$260). It's not quite what you might expect, as there's no HDMIoutput. Instead, it streams NextGenTV content to devices on your home network, be it smartphones, tablets, computers, and so on.

Most TVs won't be able to play this content directly. Instead you'll need something in between that can run the HDHomeRun app, like an Apple TV 4K or an Xbox Series X/S. With four tuners, two of which are NextGenTV, multiple people in your home can watch different programs at the same time. In a few months the company will launch a version with a built-in DVR as well. It will essentially be a "whole home" DVR for NextGen and over-the-air HD content.

zapperbox-front-scaled.jpg

The BitRouter ZapperBox is a NextGen TV tuner coming in Q2 of this year.

Zapperbox
BitRouter is aiming to start their first deliveries of their ZapperBox M1 tuners in Q2. You can reserve one now for $249. These small boxes are more traditional tuners with an HDMI output for direct connection to any TV. They also feature HD (aka ATSC 1.0) tuners and have HDR, Wi-Fi and wired internet. There's no internal storage, but BitRouter is planning on a software update to allow network-attached storage devices. They're also planning on adding, again via software update, the ability to stream content from this box to your smartphone or tablet, not just to the TV that's attached via HDMI.

zapperbox-tv-atsc3.jpg

Here's a look at the program guide on a ZapperBox.

Zapperbox
Expect to see more tuners hit the market, and prices to fall, in 2021 and beyond.

Cable channels over-the-air

Last year a company called Edge Networks launched the Evoca TV service in Boise, Idaho. Its intention is to fill the gap between free over-the-air content and paid cable service, specifically in markets underserved by both types of TV broadcasting. They do this by using the bandwidth potential of NextGenTV. The hope to expand to other small markets in the future. For now, though, they have over 60 channels, now including the 24h 4K channel Insight TV.

Evoca isn't intended to replace cable, or over-the-air broadcasts in most markets. It's an interesting alternative for smaller markets that have fewer choices in channels and high cost or limited speed internet options. You can read more about it in Cable TV channels and 4K from an antenna?.

AT-Patch: Long-Term Cardiac Monitoring With Ease
ces-day-1-10-at-patch-722x406.jpg

Atsens

Holter monitors are a standard part of ambulatory care to help your doctor pinpoint heart problems by continuously recording your heartbeat. But the disposable-camera sized monitors require sticking several electrodes, each with a wire connected to the monitor, to your chest, and the devices only give physicians a 24-hour snapshot of your heart activity. ATsens, based in South Korea, recognized these limitations and designed a small, lightweight, patch-type device that provides up to 11 days of uninterrupted cardiac monitoring to help doctors more accurately diagnose any type of heart disease. Users can wear the waterproof AT-Patch even during a shower, and they can see their ECG (electrocardiogram) signal at any time using the AT-Note app on their smartphone, or use the app to record any specific symptoms that accompany an abnormal heart event.

EcoQube: An Easier Route to Real-Time Radon Readings
ces-day-1-08-ecocube-722x406.jpg

Ecosense

The second most common cause of lung cancer, after smoking, is radon, an odorless, colorless, naturally occurring radioactive gas that can be emitted from water, rocks, and soil underneath the foundation of your house. Radon is alarmingly common, affecting as many as one in 10 homes. In the past, the easiest route to knowing if it was there was to test for it with an over-the-counter home kit. But the results generally take weeks and, truth be known, you’ll likely want to do testing over a longer period of time to gauge how much is present, and how well removal efforts are faring. Enter EcoQube, a palm-sized, Wi-Fi connected, highly sensitive radon detector that can give you an ongoing, accurate, real-time reading of the radon level in your house. Even better, EcoQube pairs with an app, which gives you real-time readings, trend charts, and alerts and allows you to share results with others.

PRE-ORDER $100, mode.co

Give it a few years, and there will no longer be such a thing as an unanswerable question about weed. Mode, for its part, will take care of how much did I just smoke, how long should I inhale, what's in this strain, and did I like that strain's high last time I tried it, to name a few. The Mode device is universal, so it'll support your inserts of choice, and the data it collects from the insert and your usage is funneled to an app that'll tell you most of what you need to know about your own weed-smoking lifestyle. It even has haptic feedback to signal your hand it's time to exhale. Get ready to see cannabis tech like this flood the market.

In a confluence of the surveillance state, heightened home security concerns, and consumer interest in baby cams and robot vacuums, Moorebot revealed a robot that functions as an autonomous surveillance camera on wheels, powered by AI tech. Basically, those Monster Truck-looking tires give it the self-driving mobility advantage over mounted cameras. Instead of one of those “Beware of Dog” signs, you’ll need one that reads “Beware of Robot.” Potential apocalyptic scenarios abound.

BUY $490, feelcove.com

If Cove delivers on its promise, it could fix the entire American workforce. Imagine. That promise is the reduction of stress, attained by wearing this head band-type thing for 20 minutes a day. Through light vibrations behind the ears, Cove allegedly activates the part of the brain that regulates anxiety. Honestly, we’re so stressed we’d try anything, including wearing this rather unfashionable and startlingly expensive device.

Shower speakers are a very real if hyper-specific category of Bluetooth speaker. Having one will change you as a human being. CES saw a new contender in the subcategory, a Bluetooth speaker made from recycled materials that attaches directly to seemingly any showerhead and uses the flow of water to power itself. Or rather, hydropower itself. Like a watermill for music, more or less.
