pretty wild this could be potentially really destabilizing for the region
:lupe: I'm very worried the Sahel region has become a hotspot for terrorism and with no strongman to challenge them things could get considerably worse and could get as bloodthirsty as Northern Mozambique.

From what I've read and heard to date it seems like it actually happened as described. Apparently has been at the front several times as President, and of course came to power that way too.

His son doesn't seem like the politically ambitious type either ( at least before this). Little to no media appearances/interviews and seems to have been known only for heading the Presidential Guard.

Pretty good obituary from the NYT: Idriss Déby Dies at 68; Poor Herder’s Son Became Chad’s Longtime Autocrat
