In a new interview with MTV's Rap Fix Live, Chicagoan emcee Chance The Rapper revealed that Top Dog Entertainment offered him a record deal, which he declined.

"They didn't almost sign me, they wanted to sign me" he clarified, after being asked about the rumor. "Don't say it like that, though. I turned down being signed... All of those guys are my good friends. That whole camp is great."

Chance explained his stance in an earlier interview on BET's 106 & Park:

"I think it's mad important for the American Dream to exist and work, and for people to believe in a homegrown and grassroots business," he said. "I'm on tour now. I've only signed mixtapes, never signed to a label. Everything that I do is a part of my own business, and I think that in doing so, as an independent artist, it gives some stake back in the music industry."

Chance wants to continue working with the TDE roster, though, specifically mentioning Ab-Soul, who he collaborated with on "Smoke Again".

"Soul was an amazing collab because it came out of nowhere," Chance said. "We became close friends and then we [collaborated]. I think he's been busy... But we'll get it in when I get to L.A."

:stopitslime: There is nothing grassroots about this industryplant

He's at the exact same point Wiz was in (almost):

He doesnt have a single as big as Black N Yellow when MMG wanted to sign Wiz, but Chance has a following.
Wiz made the right decision. We'll see down the road if CTR does.

nah wiz was waaay bigger than chance. chance is wiz when say yeah dropped. he's gonna need 2 or 3 great mixtapes to get to that level.

What I dont understand is why labels sign certain acts and have them front like theyre "independent" and have all these labels trying to sign them even though a major has been backing them the whole time... this dates back to Drake when "best I ever had" was getting radio play and he was repping YM even though claiming to be unsigned, even Kendrick and ASAP are in that same boat..

Definitely one of the hyped "this is the guy that's cool to be fan of now, you're SUPPOSED to fukk with him" cats that I'm digging the least....the main industry blogs/bloggers kept hyping up Acid Rap...for the life of me, I still can't understand why...dude is pretty fukking wack...outside of the random hook here or there, his whole style is annoying...like he's suppose to be this season's Wiz/ASAP Rocky trendy plant of the year or whatever, but I'm just not getting the appeal this go around :manny:

it makes people feel more connected to the artist. if you're following an "unsigned" artist from the early days you feel more obligated to go to the shows and buy the albums and just support him in general.

Those fans need to open their eyes, the last organic grassroots movement I saw(or at least I think) was Wiz Khalifa and im not even sure if that was 100% independent

not 100% organic but as close as any person could get. he was signed to rostrum in 06 but that was an indie label. i woundnt doubt he'd been in talks with bigger labels almost his whole career but sometime after how fly atlantic scooped him up.
