Charles Barkley is apparently surprised the NFL hasn’t expanded to San Antonio.

The former NBA great and all-time broadcasting legend has called out the NFL for horning in on Christmas, which previously was exclusively pro basketball territory.

“The NFL got greedy and started adding Christmas games,” Barkley said on Inside the NBA, via Colin Salao on Inside The NBA. “We used to have this day to ourselves, but Roger Goodell and them pigs at the NFL always want to hog every day of the week now. Christmas is an NBA day.”

The NFL didn’t get greedy, however. The NFL has been greedy. For a long time. The NFL only realized recently that it could stage up to three games on Christmas and rack up big ratings, even when the games are far from compelling.

This year, the NBA had an impressive slate of games, with all of them on ABC. And the trio of so-so streaming-only NFL games undoubtedly will outdraw the basketball contests, even though the quality of the NFL’s 2025 Christmas offerings were far closer to coal than crystal.

And while Barkley is the man, the NBA doesn’t own Christmas any more than the NFL or anyone else does. If anything, the NBA should be glad the NFL allowed it to commandeer Christmas for as long as it did without having to deal with the kind of competition that will always beat the NBA in a head-to-head battle.

Even if it was an NBA Finals game against the Browns and the Jets.

Saw someone say similar on Twitter but tradition aside, the fundamental difference between NBA on Christmas and NFL on Christmas, is at this point of the year the NFL regular season is winding down while the NBA’s is hitting its stride

If this had been Week 5 or 6, then those NFL matchups would’ve been a lot more interesting. But as it stands those matchups looked awful on paper and doesn’t sound like they beat the allegations.

Either way, I don’t give a shyt. The people who want to watch basketball will watch and a lot of those who put the NFL on weren’t going to watch the NBA regardless.

NFL will prolly deebo Silver next year with a full slate of good games

On paper heading into the season this should’ve been a good slate of games

All the teams but the cowboys were playoff teams

It’ll be the same next year when it’s like Seahawks vs bears..and injuries and stuff happen and they both 3-11 or something

They’ll still do 5x whatever warrios vs Knicks and Celtics vs lakers does so it doesn’t ultimately matter :russ:

Would the NFL still have had Christmas games if it didn’t fall on a Thursday?? Thursday is an NFL day anyway.

Tell NBC you get a thanksgiving triple header next year. Or just start the season on Christmas. Goodell and Stern had a handshake agreement to not infringe on eachothers holidays. You would see a game on thanksgivng for the NBA and nfl on christmas on Sunday

Didn't watch any NFL games yesterday.

Looking at the highlights, watching those games would've been like watching paint dry.

But many NFL fans are like that woman that has a man who cheats and beats on her, but she never has the thought of leaving.

Goofies would have a watch party for a game with teams out of the playoffs race:mjlol:
