If Charles Barkley isn’t complaining about something then it means he’s either dead or gone mute :skip:

I agree, that’s why I also wish the NBA would start putting games on Thanksgiving again. Those who want to watch, will watch.

If a person decides to watch an eliminated Cowboys go against an awful Josh Johnson led Commanders team over SA-OKC, they likely don’t fukk with the NBA like that anyway. The NBA execs can hope to win them over but good luck

Great post. I can tell you're a grown man who understands how free market capitalism works.

Cheers. 🍻

I don’t even think there’s a punishment involved really

Last year the NBA’s Christmas ratings went up despite going against the NFL. I think people are overestimating the overlap between the NFL and NBA’s fanbases. It’s not like if those games weren’t on, all of those people would’ve flipped to the NBA.
My feeling is that most nba fans are also nfl fans to a point but most nfl fans aren’t nba fans.

I mean basketball first people still pay attention to the nfl or college football, even though they don’t love it as much as ball. It’s likely their second or third most favorite sport to watch and follow.

While many football first people don’t care about the nba at all . And if they even watch basketball, it’s college.

Maybe race explains this discrepancy ? I mean black football fans also fukk with the nba. While many white football fans ignore the nba.

I also notice that Many football fans only watch football and completely ignore other sports. They don’t watch hockey, baseball, tennis, formula 1, nascar, rugby, or soccer either. Very insular and close minded mentality.

This post is full of so many non-truths I don't even know where to start. :mjlol:

You know who has time to follow every league they're a fan of meticulously? Children, "adults" who don't have shıt going for them, and adults who have enough money to actually have time to fully devote to their entertainment needs.

I grew up a fan of all 4 major leagues and consumed all that I could, on top of playing football all the way up to college. Wanna know why? Because my life consisted of nothing but school and sports. My parents handled the bills and all the other things we take for granted as kids.

Then I graduated college. Then I entered a competitive workforce with the drive to become upwardly mobile. Then I got my own place. Then I went to grad school to both improve my salary and give myself an upper hand against my competition. Then I'm dating chicks and involving myself in a serious relationship. Then I realized I started having enough money to enter the world of investments to hopefully ensure a comfortable nest egg for my retirement. And this doesn't even include having a wife and kids.

Along the way I also discovered that the world contains other things that I can do that doesn't involve me wasting away yet another 2-3 hours in front of the idiot box watching other dudes (who are better off than me financially) hit home runs, drain jump shots, score goals, or throw touchdowns.

So one by one, by the wayside went the Knicks, the Rangers, the Jets, and the Yankees. Of all 4 the teams I just mentioned the one I can see the most of is the Jets (oh God help me) because the NFL is PERFECT for an adult to follow. Games are mostly played on a day off, during the afternoon, and just one day a week. I'm still a fan of all 4 teams and catch them when I can, but not at the expense of grown ass responsibilities, and that includes sleep.

Obviously there are nefarious reasons why some people may prefer one sport and league over another, but to make it this blanket statement that it comes down to the skin color of the participating athletes is so off the mark it's downright hilarious. We grow up and get busier, and all those athletes who were our heroes as kids don't mean a damn thing to a grown man doing grown man things. Sacrifices will get made and you're gonna follow one league or 2 at most hard body.

Yeah for sure it’s a lot of Americans that keep up with the NFL but watch nothing else, not even college football

Theres a segment that is definitely race related and that’s a whole other can of worms to go down. But also for a casual sports fan, there is no easier league to follow (or pretend to follow) than the NFL.

90s bulls/cowboys, etc No sports team ever will universally be loved like that anymore, the social media era created too many haters, ragebait addicts, trolls, engagement farmers, history revisionists, cynical contrarians and jaded people. Sign of the times. People in general just lost the ability to appreciate life as it is, the ability to understand and accept basic facts, and the ability to be impressed. It seems like People lost their sense of wonder. Everything bores them, everything annoys them and nothing ever impresses them. Sometimes ignorance is bliss, too much sports coverage and talk kills the suspense, anticipation and excitement that comes with the scarcity of live sports content. Let us miss you. Sometimes less is more because it means more. Simplicity is better.

When people get bored easily, they always try to get their dopamine from complaining, hating and more extreme things.

True. Anybody can watch NFL games for free on the same big over the air accessible channels available to everyone .(Fox, abc, cbs, nbc) It also helps that most NFL games are scheduled once a week on the same day(Sunday) at reasonable hours. You can watch all your games of your favorite team from anywhere. You don’t need to live in the state of Michigan just to be able to watch Lions games. You can be a resident of Texas and still be able to watch your Lions.

The scarcity of games and schedule structure of the season also help their popularity. The NFL schedule easily fits into most people’s lives. People are busy and don’t have much free time for themselves anymore. can’t afford to be 24/7 sports fans with expertise, passion and knowledge about every sport on earth. People are tired from work/ life duties and have already lower attention spans than 25-30 years because of modern smartphones/ internet/technology/social media/living. We have also endless distractions and entertainment options at our disposal compared to 30 years ago. And unlike the other three major sports leagues in North America, following the NFL doesn’t require as much time, energy, and investment. 17 games spread over 5 months. The NFL Playoffs last a month with games every weekend of January and early February .

NBA, MLB and NHL have 5x-10x more games than the NFL. And people can’t watch most of them on TV because of regional blackouts. Fans who watch to follow their teams have to live in the same areas where the teams play, have to watch games on multiple obscure channels(FOX, NBC, ESPN, Apple TV, TNT, etc) and subscribe monthly to obscure and expensive regional/local sports networks just to have access to their games. And for MLB, NHL, NBA owners, this kind of local gatekeeping might be financially profitable short term, but it won’t grow the fanbase, bring new fans to the team/sport and keep the actual fanbase. How can people enjoy a sports product, and develop serious and deep loyalty and emotional attachment to a team if sports team owners make it hard for fans to watch the games of their local teams?

Shortsighted Greed is never the answer for longterm success. It will only hurt any sports league not named the NFL at the end because they don’t cater to their actual customers/fans and actively repel future ones. The NFL is on top of the sports world in North America because they make it easy and convenient for people to enjoy and follow their product above anything. They obey the most important rule in business/service industry/entertainment : the customer is always right, give him/her what he/she wants. He/she will be happy and you’ll get their money . Both sides will be happy with such a deal.
At the end of the day, you have to actively live your life, succeed in life, do your duties/responsabilities, take care of your health, work, Marty a woman and build a family etc. Not much free time left for entertainment. The Ups and downs of Life are exhausting, stressful and hard.

Fall/winter : people rather stay inside anyway because it’s cold, dark, snowy and rainy outside
Short, intense but spaced NFL schedule ( 17 meaningful and important regular season games from early September to early January, then 1 month of wildcard/divisional/conference championship playoffs from Jan-Feb until the Super Bowl ) the peculiar rhythms of the football season make it easy for people to watch games and follow the league. It’s convenient for everyone- Hardcore, non fans, and casual fans alike . Easiest sports product/league to follow.

NBA, nhl = 82 regular games from October to April then 2 months of playoffs in the spring

MLB = 162 regular season games from late march to late september then 1 entire month of playoffs in October

Or just start the season on Christmas
When it tips off doesn’t matter. They could start that bytch on 1 January and folks still aren’t tuning in. People gotta come to the realization that NBA hoops are third in the pecking order now behind pro and collegiate football. Maybe that’ll change in a generation but now, nah. Hell at the rate it’s going, college football is going to annoy its core audience and turn them away to the NFL or NBA. I also think a small part of the problem is the lack of interest in college basketball has actually hurt the pros.
