Were the big markets inherently better or did the NBA push this?

Boston was always up there but the Lakers were in Minnesota first. Knicks are considered legendary but they only got 2 rings.

Bulls didn't do much before or after MJ.

Spurs have been one of the most successful franchises but aren't really thought of as a big dog.

That tail has been wagging the dog forever. There's more "prestige" in the bigger markets for the media middlemen, better hotels, better options for shenanigans after work, all the bells and whistles. If a team is consistently good then they have no choice, but outside of that nobody's trying to cover the Hornets or the Grizzlies. The Knicks last championship was over 50 years ago, if they moved to New Mexico tomorrow nobody would hear of them again.
