I just picked it back up after not playing since I was a kid. It's funny thread got bumped because a lot of my coworkers said the same. We all just started playing again recently and none of us know why.

Apparently, I should be able to activate my inactive USCF membership from 24 years ago. :dead: im contemplating about whether i should join a chess club first before I get my uscf membership started. I want to play people in person where I can actually touch the pieces and socialize with who I am playing with. Ive been thinking about maybe stopping by West 4th street or the chess forum but I want to play with a beginner club because I lose a lot of my matches. Have books on strategies and openings but never really practiced.

How do I get into playing chess?
Here is a small primer on how modern chess is played.

You have to switch your mindset to something more like accountant. Pawns are worth a dollar, Knights and Bishops are worth about 3 dollars each, Rooks are worth about 5 dollars, and the Queen is worth about 9 dollars. You can learn more about that here: Chess piece relative value - Wikipedia. Chess players call this "advantage." The goal of chess is to maximize your advantages while minimizing your opps advantages.

You're winning when you have about 2 dollars more than your opp. The first strategy you should learn is called simplification. You have 2 more dollars than your opp? Trade pieces until there are few pieces on the board and convert the win using basic endgame technique. You can practice them for free here: Piece Checkmates I β€’ lichess.org

How do you get 2 pawns worth of advantage? There are two ways. The first is tactics. Short forced sequences that reoccur in patterns that you can practice. Here is a list: Chess Tactical Motifs and Themes. You can practice them for free here: Practice your chess. The other is small advantages (think in terms of nickels, dimes, and quarters) called Positional advantages. You can see the patterns here: Chess Positional Motifs and Themes. You don't really practice these as much as keep your eye out for them and try to collect as many as possible to "nickel and dime" your opp into a bad position.

The game is split into three phases, the Opening, the Middlegame, and the Endgame. The opening is least important and fairly intuitive to play as long as you follow the basic ideas like control the center, castle your king, and develop your pieces. The middlegame and endgame are the most important and hardest to learn. You can see more here: Chess theory - Wikipedia

These are the basic checkmate patterns: Chess Tactical Motifs and Themes. You can practice them for free here: Practice your chess. Checkmate comes from having a ton of advantage over your opponent.

At the end of the day, this is all chess really is. It just takes a few months to a year to get used to thinking like this and a lifetime to master.

It's never been easier.

You can go to chess.com and play bots or online people. You don't even have to register. Same with lichess.org. if you want to keep track of your games and add friends and play people on the coli, register, it's free. You can download the apps on your phone or tablet or play through browser. Any system you have has chess games, switch, PS5, Xbox.

All these are free. No login required. Click the link, start doing puzzles.

Now chess puzzle.net is dope because you can really filter what you want. Like if you want to practice ladder mates, Anastasia mates, Boden mates, mate in 1, mate in 6, Bishop and Knight mates, rook mates, openings, middlegame, endgame. It's all there.

You start seeing familiar patterns, positions, your game goes up.

I botched an in person timed game because I fukked up a ladder mate.
Also duolingo has chess from beginner to slightly better beginner.

Puzzles get you better, from just playing to studying different endings, tactics, etc
