Gunfire rang out just before 6 a.m. Wednesday near the 22nd District police station in the city’s Morgan Park neighborhood, around the 1900 block of West Monterey Avenue, where the officers were headed toward the on-ramp of Interstate 57 in a white Chrysler 300.
McLaurin told investigators that he had been watching the car, thinking its occupants were members of a rival gang on his turf, a federal criminal complaint states,
according to WGN.
McLaurin stated that he began following the Chrysler because he believed that it was a vehicle driven by ‘opps,’ referring to members of a rival street gang,” the complaint states. “Specifically, McLaurin explained that on or about July 6, 2021 — the day before the shooting — a friend told McLaurin that there was a white Chrysler 300 surveilling the area.”
Upon spotting the car Wednesday morning, McLaurin — who was in a white Chevrolet Malibu — took aim with a 9 mm Glock pistol that he purchased a few months earlier for personal protection and opened fire, prosecutors allege in the complaint.
After the shooting, McLaurin fled the scene and dropped the gun down a storm drain, court records state.
Thursday that Eugene McLaurin was charged with one count of assault with a dangerous and deadly weapon on a special agent from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. If convicted, the 28-year-old suspect faces up to 20 years behind bars.
A probe into the incident is ongoing and McLaurin could face additional charges.
