Humanoid robots are basically worthless as anything other than entertainment or a novelty.

On a factory floor, what will be more efficient? A robot with wheels that can carry many items stacked upon its back or something in the shape of a human which has more points of failure?

What's more efficient as a window cleaner? A drone or a humanoid?

What's more effective to transfer disabled people from bed, a wheelchair that can adjust height while an overhead lift carries the person or a humanoid robot?

The practical use i can see for humanoid robots would be for animatronic attractions at Disney land or for crash test dummies, training dummies for medical purposes, and military operations where they appear as civilians but are actually recording data---but even then you're better off making small drones that record and pass data to their swarms.

there are a lot of uses cases and people with unique disabilities in a wheechair a humanoid would be a better option over a robotic equipment. a person that needs a wheelchair that can adjust height and a overhead lift can get a lot more out of a humanoid which can likely adapt to different environments(hotels/motels, friends/relatives home, public restroom, etc), new variables within a patients home. humanoids could be bonafide caregivers in a way preprogrammed fixed equipment can't.

You're making a strong argument for an exoskeleton. If a disabled person can't move their lower body, then an exoskeleton give them the mobility they lost. A robot is worthless when a person can just put on a lightweight exoskeleton that allows them to walk and pick up items as needed. It could be operated by electrodes that are stuck on to the person's head and spine that pick up on brain signals and make guesses as to what the person wants to do.

That's far more impressive and useful. It would be useful for factory workers too to allow them to carry more weight and avoid musculoskeletal injuries or astronauts who are in low gravity situations that need their body weighed down.

I think gene therapy treatments/cures comes before lightweight exoskeletons or make them moot for those cases.

Far more ethical hurdles to have to overcome with genetic modifications and it opens the door to making racism several times worse.

Imagine a world in which white people who already have a collective wealth advantage can now also genetically modify their children to live longer, be more resistant to disease, and literally be genetically superior. It would justify race science and bring back eugenics. That is not a door that we should ever open.

With exoskeleton, we at least have tested the technology out with robots. That's what I see this as, a trial run for the actually useful technology.

Similar to how we use AI for image generation but that's actually a pointless application of it. Using it to clean up damaged photos, colorize b&w footage upscale low resolution footage though? That's far more practical and actually useful.

Chat bots are worthless, but can be used as educational aids for children or people who have brain injuries. The underlying technology has meaningful uses, the problem is the people who have them right now are focused on how they can monetize it instead of focusing on how it can enhance existing technology that people actually use right now.

thats not really the gene therapy i had in mind.

I don't think A.I image generation is pointless at all. :ld:

chatbots are far from worthless :gucci:

Considering what I know about working in tech/engineering, the progress has been pretty wild.

You release and iterate. It’s come a long way, only a matter of time. Not only for China either.

Robots could barely even stand themselves back up two years ago much less rebalance.

And in Shenzhen, the world's first 6S robot store is now open!

[Quoted tweet]
On July 28, the grand opening of the world's first 6S robot store and the first robot block tour took place at Longgang Robot Theater, Shenzhen!
Unlike traditional car 4S stores (Sales, Spare Parts, Service, Survey), this innovative 6S robot store adds "Lease" and "Customized" solutions, bridging the gap between lab tech and real-world applications.
Location: The Galaxy WORLD Industrial Park, Bantian, Longgang District, Shenzhen.

Dancing and elderly care? Shenzhen's robots have it all!
Combining cutting-edge technology with heartwarming charm, these innovative robots have captured global attention, including Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Xie Feng and the Chinese Embassy in the U.S.
Where AI meets human care, Shenzhen is redefining the future of compassionate technology.

Maybe they could hang the robot above the roadway and give it color coded lights so that traffic can see it more than a few cars back without having to make out the hand signs.
