was a brief conflict that occurred in early 1979 between China and Vietnam. China launched an offensive in response to Vietnam's invasion and occupation of Cambodia in 1978, which ended the rule of the Chinese-backed Khmer Rouge. The conflict lasted for about a month, with China withdrawing its troops in March 1979.

The interesting thing about Vietnam, is the average Vietnamese doesn't have any animosity towards Americans. They hate French and Chinese way more. Their perspective is that the Americans were just dummies for letting the French drag them into conflict. The Chinese are probably who they hate the most and have had beef for centuries with. They are always ready to beef with China. There is a reason everyone in the region hate their ass.

They managed to capture most of the cities they targeted at the start of the war. And while they suffered more casualties than necessary because outdated tactics and weapons and didn't manage to force Vietnam to withdraw from Cambodia they manage to withdraw in good order while destroying Vietnamese infrastructure.
Even your article said so:

China:
Western estimate:
  • 26,000 killed
  • 37,000 wounded
  • 260 captured
Vietnam:
Western estimate:
  • 30,000 killed
  • 32,000 wounded
  • 1,638 captured
When you said got bodied, I though you mean like how France got surrounded and destroyed at Dien Bien Phu or how Italy got routed at Adwa. While China failed in their objective they didn't get defeated and routed in the field.

And this is a fair assessment, but no one seems to keep that same energy when looking at US Vietnam War casualties.

All that being said, it's wild that the US and Vietnam are basically allies now, communism or not. Kinda proves the 2 systems should be able to coexist and intermingle without issue.

china has added quite a few billion dollars to there army im guessing since than
Yup, Sino-Vietnamese war happened when PLA was at its lowest after more than a decade of Cultural Revolution with many of experienced officers purged and weapon development stagnated. Even Deng Xiaoping doesn't have much expectation that PLA could defeat Vietnam and some people said he sent them there to keep PLA busy while he consolidate his power in China. In the subsequent decade China reform their armed force and adopt many Western technologies. In the border clashes in the 80s PLA manage to capture several strategic heights inside Vietnam and beat back every Vietnamese attempt to retake it until China gave it back after normalization of relationship in 1991.

Russia is a Ultranationalist state whose leader, Putin helped bring down USSR, admired Imperial Russia, blamed USSR for fracturing Russia and regularly harass communist movement in Russia, While China is Communist state that still admire Lenin and both country used to be enemy during Cold War. So it's not really that weird for former enemies to turn buddy and ignore each other internal matter as long they geopolitically aligned.

Trying to track with you, Putin brought down the USSR and blamed it for fracturing Russia; is that what you're saying? I'm well aware of his admiration for the old Russian Federation and the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

I actually believe the G20 was prepared to let China sit at the top of global hegemony until Xi Jinping showed his ass in 2018. But in conjunction with his belligerence, China has seemingly been lying on their books. So that'll never happen again. And subsequently China and Russia are making strange, albeit cautious, bedfellows.

I try to imagine a past where the US wasn't so antagonistic to communist countries. Stalin didn't help things and legimately helped the ownership class put the fear of God into average US citizens about socialism, even though it's a more preferable system, and what honestly we seemingly were moving towards until Nixon and later Reagan forever changed that trajectory.
