I don't think it's an exaggeration. Of course, it's not socialism in its purest form like some people want it to be. But the main features of China make it socialist. They had to adapt it to the reality of their country at a certain time. It's what they call socialism with chinese characteristics.

Yeah the Asians I talk to are FOB grad students. Their perspective reflects a younger generation tired of their countries excesses I guess and they are particularly irritated by their parents wanting to tow the line to maintain peace.Every communist-like country will have its people hating their country. I’m not sure what China is doing in Africa, but, according to them they are distrustful of any moves their government makes in other countries. Describes them as “ruthlessly utilitarian” and “systematically inhumane”.

I’ve never been there so I can’t verify either way. Also many are Taiwanese and seem to have a bad taste in their mouths for the Chinese. I dunno the history.
