You have crooks like Mitch mcconnell,Orrin Hatch,Grassley,Graham etc who have been in congress for a long time despite representing some of the worst and poorest states/districts in the country and their constituents continue to vote for them.

Consequences only apply to politicians from purple state that isn't gerrymanderd. As long as you have partisan/sheep voters, your position is never in geopardy.

Can you imagine Trump losing states like west virginia,missisipi,Georgia,Alabama,Tennesse etc under any circumstances as a result of his action or inaction? me neither

Trump owes his victory to 3-4 Midwest states. That is also the states that swung widely back to Democrats in the midterms and who these tarrifs hurt the most. If he doesn't win these same 3-4 Midwestern states, and I'm not saying for sure he won't, he will not win.

All the states you listed aren't even part of the calculus but as far as this particular issue is concerned, China has more leverage in the short term given the slim and the barely tenable electoral math that brought Trump into the white house in the first place.

But as far as state level politicians you're right. Folks like McConnel could never be touched like you said.
