Just extreme level of competition there for entrance into the selective universities. Students are doing what they think will give them an edge on students they will be competing against on the entrance exams.

What they doing to kids in China for the academic edge against the world is a direct conflict against the 1st amendment, as well as other Constitutional rights, like labor laws. If mental abuse by pushing these kids to mental exhaustion is the only way to get that "edge", is basically a human rights issue.
