None of those so called "hits" were.meither written nor produced by ashanti. So let's not pile all the credit of her buzz to her. To be fair yes she was a great artist, but let's keep it real, murder inc was killing it back then so it's fair to say ashanti had alot of help "out the gate"
chole has a whole beyonce co-sign, she exists because beyonce put her on. her and her sister performed at every big award show despite their music being no where, she then became a regular on a TV show...she has had just as much, if not more, help than ashanti. they are the only artists on bey's management label, they have all her (company's) attention/resources

maybe that's the thing - aaliyah was a huge star to millennials, she doen't need your gen x co-sign :heh:
But the thing is we were there and outside at the time. I was in college in Atlanta when One In A Million dropped and clubbing 5 nights a week..

History has been rewritten but God bless the dead..

Naw... that's not her performance, that's just the crowd. It's looks like they're having some type of dinner.
As a performer you gotta know what the crowd is looking for.

With a crowd like that you pull out a stool, you talk to them a little, try to make it feel intimate make them reminisce to get them in the groove. Then you just jam to the song like you’re singing it with your friends at somebody’s spot while everybody is finishing getting ready to go out to dinner.

That song is a vibe… while you could get away with slipping it into a sex mix, it’s not quite that type of song. I mean let’s be serious, we were doing that beat on the lunch room tables when we were kids. Maybe she’s too young to understand, but she should have at least been able to understand what type of performance that type of crowd is looking for.

nikka i was there in real time, aaliyah was big as shyt to us...maybe yall were too old to give AF, but us in who were anywhere from 4th-12th grade for that album, it was huge :heh:

aaliyah jumped a whole other level with that, her first release, she easily got outdone by brandy and monica, one in a million dropped and she was a star for us. we wont even get to how much she influenced fashion for us

beyond the wack out of place performance

why did she choose this song to perform? it does nothing for her vocals. she sounds like shyt. even the live arrangement can’t save her and usually live instrumentation is way better than studio on some jill scott/erykah badu shyt

Aaliyah got saved by Timbaland.. In '95-'96 she was headed to irrelevance....

Timbaland and Missy had the juice.. They just needed a pretty avatar..

The only difference between her and Tweet is a couple of shades of skin color..

And she stole her fashion steez from Boss..

Again...God bless the dead..

you say this as if it undermines her impact...it's r&b, the right writers and producers are always part of the equation for success :heh:

aaliyah was a big fukkin deal to 80's millennials, as i said, we don't need gen x to co-sign how we feel about her :ld:

Mainstream black female musicians have been terribly managed lately. They’re either barely promoted or awkwardly pigeonholed like this.

I remember seeing meg performing at the Oscars or something like it & it had the same confusing energy.

Are you telling me one in a million wasn’t hot in in late 96 into 97??? Are you telling me “are you that somebody” wasn’t hot in the summer of 98? :mjlol: What’s next?? Usher was popping after he released MY Way??

these women and their handlers confuse sexual liberation with needing to be a thot 24/7
