He can definitely rap, but I can't get into his songs.

The greats are the ones who are technically skilled AND able to make classic albums too.

Pun could do it all.

His pops could make records, he can't and doesn't seem to want to be that guy. Seems complacent making songs with Cory Gunz and Sadat X in 2016 and performing at boom bap festivals...

He's still raw, but I don't know if he's even interested in being the best song maker

Maybe his way of paying homage to his pops is just carrying on his legacy of being a great lyricist

and getting respect for that amongst people that still care about that type of thing

I`m not a fan, I`m someone who actually grew up in the Culture.

Yeah, me too breh.

I'm a '78 baby, so I've lived through all eras of hip hop,

and remember vividly a time where hip hop discussions tended to revolve around skill,

not what formula an emcee had to follow in order to make a classic album,

what song they should release for their first single,

or if their subject matter was diversified enough to sell units.

Heres the thing. From a perspective of those who actually in the Culture these songs are about, the defining factor of artist were if they made good music and could Rock a crowd. This kid doesnt make good music, same way Battle rappers make terrible music. They are skilled Poets yes, but they dont make good music. Typically those who try to do the whole Technical Rapper > Rapper Who Rocks the Crowd are people not of the culture, because they lack the one thing that makes one FEEL the music.

When I hear this kid I hear the Eminem type artist who is technically skilled but their music lacks soul and feels empty and you cant feel it.

Rappity rap/miracle/lyrical/metaphysical shyt that made cacs in the late 90s cream over their Rawkus tote bags. He needs to learn how to make solid songs. The day and age of the rambling lyricist is over.

I don't think Chris is better than Pun or close to it yet but he's a young man with a lot of potential, give him time to grow, don't box him up. He DOES know how to make songs also, he has made some dope songs, he's still got a few areas to work on, he's got all the potential in the world though, I would put no limits on how great he could be. But he isn't comparable to Pun yet but we heard Pun later when he older I believe. Chris of course has similarities to Pun but he also has different elements to his style, let him be free for now, don't be too harsh on him or say he can't do this or that, he has time on his side to learn how to do everything he wants. He could certainly be a future great, at the moment he's still developing....

I haven't heard any of the kids music, I just heard the song I posted for the first time when I posted it, i'm strictly speaking on his skill as a rapper

I'm a member of the culture of hip hop first, and a fan of the rap music industry second

I hold cats like J.U.I.C.E. and Supernatural in a much higher regard than a lot of emcees with the highest levels of industry type accolades

But to add on to the points that you're addressing, if he was to hook up with a record industry vet such as a Fat Joe, I have no doubt that he wouldn't be able to make some good songs just like his pops was able to

It's not that battle rappers make terrible music, a lot of them just never have the privilege of working with someone with the knowledge, ear, connections, and patience to make them successful industry artists.

The same "rappity rap/miracle/lyrical/metaphysical shyt", sprinkled with one or two mainstream records, helped his father become the 1st latino rapper to sell a million albums

i like him but no. his dad had way more style than him. and was more effortless at being impressive without coming off like he was too lyrical miracle spiritual about it.
