Why is this specific Chris Rock routine so cringeworthy, looking back?

Yet, having a group named nikkaz With Attitude that sold the majority of its music to white male teens at the time, and years later had a worldwide biographical film smash, was not a problem?

And many had no issue with the Three 6 Mafia winning Best Original Song on the 2006 Academy Awards national telecast for "It's Hard Out Here For Pimp."

What are the conditions for applying the "let's not say this in front of white people" rule?

I swear these discussions cause a headache from overthinking it. When some Black folks don't take themselves too seriously and poke fun at themselves, other Black people will disparage them as self hating c00ns. When some Black people decide for themselves to not care what white people think, some Black folks will still accuse them of c00ning simply because there might be a white audience. Reading between the lines of both instances, one gets the feeling that some "conscious" folks feel that Black people regardless of behavior, are above any form of criticism, ridicule, or the subject of humor.

Apparently, Chris Rock got the idea for this joke from "Us" by Ice Cube, which makes sense considering what the song is about.

I thought this routine was hilarious when I first saw it in 2015, and I still think it is. Not once did I consider it c00ning. But I can definitely see why some people here don't like it anymore or never liked it.

I remember when the #OscarsSoWhite thing blew up last year and Tony Rock said that we need to stop begging to be included in things that white people clearly don't want us involved in, and we can't care about what they think. Because once we have our own thing and it becomes popular, they're going to try taking it from us anyway. That's actually very similar to what Chris said in his routine about welfare. Even though there are plenty of white people on welfare, we can't care about it and the only thing we can do is our own thing.

The joke was meant for a specific audience, just like The Boondocks or Chappelle's Show. But because there are many (predominantly white) people out there that won't look at the joke the same way, they're going to misinterpret it and use it as a crutch, or believe that Chris wrote this routine because he has self-hate.

Bottom line, the routine still holds up today but I completely understand why Chris doesn't perform it anymore. :yeshrug:

The Movie and Academy Award comparison doesn't even make much sense. Your question about NWA was an obvious answer, everyone knows NWA hugely controversial and deemed a problem. Rev. Calvin Butts, C Delores Tucker, Dan Qualye and The FBI.

As for your latter question, numerous members have already answered your question regarding "what are the conditions". When white supremacists and even non-white racists start using your bits as leverage over Black people tp be racist, and you have the ability to stop them from doing so, it's time to re-think what you're saying.

That's just the thing though, we're not wrapped up in what white people think, we're simply telling them stop ruining something we used to enjoy as comedy by using it to justify stereotypical racism.

I'll play along with your loaded question and say white people, as I previously did.

Everything comes back to white people's perception with these dudes. Another reason to not take them seriously. I mean, everything. I sit back and peep it.

Question wasn't loaded breh as I genuinely want to see where you're coming from. . I believe in open dialogue without the typical TLR bullshyt!t we're accustomed to on here.
