Paying Jizya allows Christians to practice their religion in peace, gives them some sort of autonomy, exempts them from serving in the military and they get guaranteed protection from the state. Sounds like a good deal to me

One of the reason is that it was used as proof of the non Muslim citizens' loyalty to the state.

Muslims pay a seperate tax called zakat. This is before the modern welfare state. How were christians supposed to live in muslim lands for all these years and pay no taxes?

We're talking about in the religion of Islam what is mandated. If you wanted to establish a nation based on Christianity, I wouldnt be against that either. Muslims and Christians have the same treatment except Christians dont pay zakat because zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. In place of that, they play jizya.

During the Ummayad caliphate it has been said that only 30% of non muslims were even required to pay Jizya, as women the elderly etc dont have to.

If they arent democratic societies then how can you properly suggest those leaders enjoy the support of their people?

And if they do, should we not consider the context? Ie. Everything around them is even more fukked so let's stick with the undemocratic royal police state cuz at least we aren't Syria or Iraq?

you have to be pretty ignorant not to understand the Jizya, Muslims Pay Zakat because its part of the religion, muslims have no right to make a non muslim pay a religious tax in the name of Islam, so they pay a tax that non muslims pay (jizya). I guess the punishment for not paying their taxes is death over there obey the laws, its not a difficult law to comprehend, unless youre an idiot.
