what about all those other "cast" apps that dont require chromecast?

I have one of these things but its still in the box, was going to give it away as a Christmas present, but maybe I'll keep it. From what I understand this is primarily a device for non smart TVs correct? No point in having it on a Smart TV?

sort of , i mean all these apps you see available for it (netflix,youtube,plex etc) your only able to use them by running them from a smartphone,computer,tablet . A better device to turn a tv into a smart tv should be a roku 3, the chromecast is a good complimentary device to it

Plex requiring a subscription pretty much fukked that up for me, :pacspit: Looks like I'll be upgrading that dying Roku 1 in my living room..:flabbynsick:

its only $30 a year. well worth it imo

$20 more can almost get you a Roku that can do more, including Plex. Like @midwesthiphop stated, the Chromecast is a cool complimentary device though.
