The Common classics imo are Resurrection, Like Water For Chocolate and Be. And the only DJ Quik album really considered a classic is his debut.

quik is the name is a classic but you can't front on safe + sound and rhythm-al-ism unless you just don't like funky music. both them albums are classics, with rhythm-al-ism bein' a bit underrated

balance and options is a very underrated album, i consider that a classic too

it's not just Common. The argument would still work if it was Nas or any other rapper.

It makes no sense that Nas has 1 classic and Quik has 3. First of all, I think it's rare for any hip hop artist to have 2 classics, let alone 3. And they'd have to be God tier for that. Which Quik isn't. Not shytting on the man, but he's not a God tier level rapper or producer (whether in quality output or notoriety). If he were, it'd be obvious.

Who cares though? You never gonna get a consensus on what is or isn't a classic especially nowadays and this thread is no different no matter how many polls you put up or rules you put in place. I personally think Quik has 3 classics (4 b/c I think Balance and Options is a personal classic. That album got unfairly hated on). He don't have to be some god level MC to acquire that feat IMO. I do agree though that hardly anyone...hell I'd say no one has 4 universally accepted classics (Face being the closest IMO if you include Geto Boys album Til Death Do Us Part)

balance and options = classic
under tha influence = not a classic
trauma = not a classic
the book of david = not a classic
the midnight life = not a classic

even the albums that aren't classic, are still some good music. quik got 1 of the best catalogs in all of hip hop. only album i didn't care for was his last, the midnight life

On another note, Common and Nas had their chances already, what does that have to do with Quik's classic albums thread? Their "stans" had their say and they voted accordingly. If you make or have made a Biggie thread and he gets 2 out 4, shyt if I care. Same for anyone else, they have had their say so don't interrupt any other artist's discussion.

I'm guessing there's going to be an updated Nas and Common thread or a recount, huh?

Yeah but these polls shouldn't be about stannery. Nas is my favorite rapper of all time and I think he has only one classic. If I can hold my favorite rapper to a standard, why can't others do the same for the ones they like? It defeats the entire purpose of these discussions.

I like Common and whatever yall agree with in his poll is cool but don't try to shyt on Quik and his work or dispute his classics to big up Common in here. shyt Quik deserves an honorary nod for for his mixing alone and work on AEOM. Production is a whole nutha story and category.

as someone suggested, there's gotta be a minimum number of votes to make this kinda shyt stick. No point running polls when 40 Quik fans can run in and vote classic on everything.

we'll get all the lists done first and then figure it out for there, but we will need to have a minimum limit for total vote numbers for sure...

@Techniec well relative to everyone else Pac having 3 is much, especially when you consider ODB wasn't given any classics, Common wasn't, Redman only got 2 and so on and so forth. But of course ignoring the relative to...yeah Pac deserves 3.

It is not some ridiculous assertion that Quik has 3 classics. Ask any west coast or Quik fan what those 3 albums meant to them.

I would challenge anyone to find even ONE subpar track on those THREE albums combined

If Common didn't get a classic, that's not Quiks fault nor is it evidence of a conspiracy by Quik fans. Youre making it seem as if we're giving Classic status to Daz's solo here. This is DJ Quik, the second greatest producer out of California and respected and recognized by heads as a legend. If Primo is the east coast Dre, Quik is our RZA. His body of work is phenomenal. We're not even getting into Konnected, Street Gospel, 2nd II None etc

Balance and Options is like Last Meal or Thug Life Vol 1...a personal classic for me, but objectively as a head I cant say definitely its an outright classic

I had to dap and comment that I completely agree with this.

I've said before that "classic" is often simply code for "album that I like," and you have people who say that every album by their favorite artists are classics, every song is a 10/10, etc., which is ridiculous. And this has nothing to do with this particular artist and this particular thread, but is true in general. A lot of people are simply completely incapable of any semblance of objectivity when it comes to their favorites.

I see what you doing but I put more stock into a solo artist having more classic albums than a group and then one of em putting out a near classic solo album but like I said no one is going to have a clear consensus so its whatever.
