Bruh, this was in the era that most albums got 2 or 3 singles. That's not noteworthy.

To contrast, I love UGK. They are arguably my favorite group. And even though I LOVE Dirty Money,
I didn't vote it as a classic when we did their thread. The deluxe version has 6 singles on it...but the original
issue only has 3.

The average rap fan might know or be familiar with those singles, but they may not know or have even cared to hear
the rest of the album. So I couldn't in good conscience call that a classic.
I understand your point, but just as a question do you think by that definition there are WAY fewer classics than we give credit to? Having high quality music while also having a huge cultural impact (to quality as a classic) pretty much eliminates many of the lesser known acts and favors your older, more established, and more easily recognized artists. I kinda agree with what you're saying, just not sure if i'm totally clear.

I appreciate your way of going about things, unlike the faq who was showing off about living those times and being the end all of knowledge. thanks breh

Now let me say this. I think typically, Life After Death has been given the classic label. I'm not denying that, and what you've shown me has confirmed that LAD brings everything to the table as far as objective measures can be ascertained. But as I said, for my PERSONAL definition, I go by quality first. Das EFX's first album is one of the most important and influential in hip-hop, but it doesn't have the quality imo. I feel the same way about this, but for different reasons.

I just wish I was really living those times so I could read those magazines tho
:noah:

So if you can convince me the album has minimal filler then it is on THAT basis I will consider giving it a yes vote. But I appreciate the knowledge, seriously.

Also just a question: did this album go diamond before AEOM?
:ohhh:

:salute:

i advices every young hip hop head to get your hands on as much source mag from the '90s as you can
its was truly amazing reading there small section called unsigned hype
thereafter months/years later some of those names became hip hop superstars/icons

ei.
biggie, mobb deep, DMX, common, em etc....etc...

as far as LAD goes with the fillers
check out d-dot on juan esptein - see 36:00 mark for the next 15-20 mins rosenberg n chipa discuss this topic
they agree with most on here - but as i already stated girls go hard for them female friendly songs
(it was biggie n puff vision to make an album that covered the whole spectrum of the hip hop fan)
club/party
radio/video
female love/sex
hardcore/gangsta
colabo west coast/mid west superstar
became the hop hop album formula

and yeah
LAD went diamond in about 3 years
AEOM took over 10 years

I'm Black. what's that have to do with those songs being blatant jiggy records?

You are using jiggy as a pejorative. Hypnotize dropped in what, spring 97? Mo Money that summer. Jiggy came out 98. He also bit the chorus from De La :troll:. Will Smith was just riding the Big/Puffy cool flow over 4 bar looped soul hit formula they did for Big Poppa. When Big did it white people hopped on the wave, Will Smith was directly using that approach to target the white audience.

EDIT: I think Phonte originally said something to that effect too. That Big kind of fukked up shyt for artists by being so charismatic and dope an emcee as to body those looped up disco records, which in turn leads to stuff like Getting Jiggy as a kitschy attempt at the same thing.

I know. I was using jiggy to describe a certain style of beat and video, which those big songs fall under. son was trying to say mo money wasn't a mainstream single.

There's more to it than the bolded though right? For it to be Jiggy it had to be a simple loop of something super familiar to as broad an audience as possible. Dianna Ross. David Bowie. And something with a soft sound.
That Herb Alpert record was a number one hit in 79, maybe it was just me being completely ignorant of the record before Hypnotize :yeshrug:
It had a harder edge to me than Mo Money and Jiggy :yeshrug:
