Only his debut LP is an undisputed classic to me. 187 He Wrote is really good, but after that I wasn't feeling his music as much.

Wow I like what I'm hearing so far. I'm surprised at how well Spice 1 can spit:wow:

Out of the Bay Area, Del the Funky Homosapien is probably my favorite as of right now. This guy is def up there now

His first cd was an EP called Let It Be Known, and in the liner notes he thanked his "potna Del from the Lench Mob".
:salute:

Voted yes on the first one, and that's it.

187 He Wrote is a PERFECT ALBUM. A MASTERPIECE. SHOULDA WENT TRIPLE...but it's not a "classic".
Amerikkka'z Nightmare seems the be the closest album to being a classic after the first one...but not quite.
Black Bossalini AKA "Dr. Bomb From Da Bay" is probably pound-for-pound Spice at his best, and the one I bump the most...but not a "classic".

interested in the bold

d'you mind expanding on that? so the quality on 187 He Wrote is there. What is it lacking? What does the debut have that it doesn't?

So many flows and styles it's amazing. Especially that stutter.

it's weird.

You can take his first three albums and call any ONE of them a classic, but not the other two.

it's that ONE you call classic that's gonna be up for debate.

That's kinda how I feel. I figured 187 was the consensus amongst them so I voted that, even though I prefer the debut.

I was debating voting it for the same reason, even though I prefer Amerikkka's Nightmare.

You really can't go wrong, only debate which one you pick lol

Ultimately for me in these discussions, the most weight is on one thing: Public reception.

I think 187 He Wrote is much better than the self-titled version, and I think most who have heard both would agree.
However, the self-title album got MUCH burn. First time I ever heard of Spice 1, I was in the barber shop reading a Jet
magazine...always flipped to the back because it had "The Weeks Best Albums" and "The Weeks Best Singles" in there.
Spice 1 - Spice 1 was number 1 this particular week...mind you, this was over Luther Vandross, Death Certificate,
Mariah Carey's first album,
2Pacalypse Now, Luke, and Public Enemy. As we started hearing the songs, the rep got bigger.

Understand: ask most people what they know about Spice 1 in general, and what would they say?
- he's the East Bay Reggae Gangster
- the stutter flow
- "coolin' on the corner with the cellular phone..."
- he kicked off the brand-naming songs

...all that is from the first album.

I like almost all of Spice's albums more than the first one, but it's the one that got the most reach.

Amerikkka's Nightmare was the start of the decline. It had some jams on it, but nowhere near the level of the first two. :wow:

Whatever happened to that producer/rapper Blackjakk?

Man, songs off that album got MAJOR burn.

1-800/1-900 -SPICE and 187 Proof/Pure was like some hole in the wall juke joint staples back then. :russ:

Welcome To The Ghetto..... In My Neighborhood is one of the BEST hardcore/gansta radio singles EVER.

Some label or whatever needs to start remastering these old joints and putting them back out, for real.

But you getting repped for bringing up Jet magazine. If it wasn't for those music charts and Beauty of the Week, no telling what kinda person I'd be right now. :mjlol:
