That validation you're speaking of is telling that fan he's listening to quality music. All of the arguments you see online surrounding sales are made to either tell you I'm a fan of somebody that is great that sells alot or your artist doesn't sell much therefore he's trash.Arguments surrounding numbers rarely revolve around them being a good artist. It is validation for fans. Same goes for reviews. Fans feel validated by these things, which is they continue to drive discussion. I've never seen a fan base the quality of music on numbers. When fans do bring up numbers, its to justify relevance, impact, and appeal. So even if it isn't admitted, numbers do matter.
