Arguments surrounding numbers rarely revolve around them being a good artist. It is validation for fans. Same goes for reviews. Fans feel validated by these things, which is they continue to drive discussion. I've never seen a fan base the quality of music on numbers. When fans do bring up numbers, its to justify relevance, impact, and appeal. So even if it isn't admitted, numbers do matter.

That validation you're speaking of is telling that fan he's listening to quality music. All of the arguments you see online surrounding sales are made to either tell you I'm a fan of somebody that is great that sells alot or your artist doesn't sell much therefore he's trash.

And it's stupid discussing sales on artists like the Clipse who aren't really trying to break out of their niche. They're going to try to sell as much as they can to their core, and they're not gonna stray far from the music they make to bring in more. They've made a nice living for themselves in that.
