Listening to the NYT interview...it's good so far, really insightful. But also kinda depressing on two fronts. The first...this is actual music journalism and it's also jarring to hear it in an era completely dominated by bullshyt streamers who don't know anything about music, or bullshyt radio personalities trying to go viral with vulgar/ignorant comments. This is just a conversation about music and artistic background.

The second...at one point it's mentioned that one of the NYT journalists came to Paris a few years ago and Pharrell played him some of the album. Granted I have no way of knowing whether black journalists or rap personalities were played the album. Perhaps they were. But I have a problem with the way white journalists are constantly given opportunities in exchange for white interest, while black journalists don't get anything. Rob Markman doesn't get the opportunity. Justin Hunte doesn't get the interview. We have real, black journalists out there yet they can't get a look from black rappers who actually fukk with them.

A major criticism of Kendrick that I have is that he went on that "watch the party die" rant, he watches all the bullshyt from Ak and others etc....yet at no point has he done anything to openly support these guys. I'm all for artists being mysterious and not doing much press. But Kendrick can't sit down with Markman, or Hunte?

Kendrick doesn’t sit down with ANYBODY so its not like he’s giving white journalists access that nobody else has, he doesn’t fukk with the press and hasn’t since after Damm dropped.

And when he did grant interviews twice last year it WAS to black journalists. Ebro and Nadeska Alexis for the Super Bowl interview and Kaitlyn Greenige for Harper’s Bizarre.

It’s the exact same song length as the OG version so I dunno. Maybe if they remove either Push or Malice’s verse? Both versions are exactly 3 mins and 15 seconds

Yea for DAMN he did the standard Apple Music interview with the white guy, but at least he also did LA (black) media at the time. Chopped it up with Big Boy. I acknowledged he doesn't do much of any press these days and while I did forget about the Harper's piece...I don't count the SB thing. That was just standard NFL/SB promo.

I'm gonna die on this hill but I think it's important for artists to talk about their art every now and then. Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Miles Davis, etc...they all did it. Even acknowledging it's a different era now, I just think it's disappointing that we don't have a definitive Kendrick interview post-Mr Morale. Where he's actually asked follow up questions and it's a thoughtful process instead of PR.
