So Stardust was not his idea, but he took it and ran with it till he got to a point where he could have a match he wanted with Arrow at SummerSlam. His Dad passes, and he decides to continue on with the match since it was something his Dad enjoyed.

He finishes that match, and thinks "Ok thats over now lets bring back Cody". Creative says "Huh? No just be Stardust ok thanks"

Spends 6 months getting this response, and realizes his dream of being in the Title picture is over. So he makes the call to leave

For sure. The only time he was committed was that Arrow match, because of his friendship with Amell and his Dad liking the idea of Arrow vs Stardust. In the end he picked that 1 match over pushing to get Cody back when his Dad passed, which would have been his best chance.
