Shotgun for all around self defense. Rifles are almost effective as general use weapons, but 100x more fun to own. I'd get a rifle if you plan on taking it to the range, or a shotty if you're just looking for something to keep next to the bed.
Pistols are nothing more than sidearms to me. Extremely limited self defense application effectiveness and quickly become boring to shoot after the initial thrill wears off.

I'm in the market for a long gun, and I'm definitely getting a rifle first. I'll get a shotgun in a couple of years. Rifles seem to be easier to use and safer, especially if you live with people and have neighbors close by.

actually a shotgun would be the safer bet imo. With a shotgun you really don't have to worry about shooting through your walls and accidentally hitting your neighbor or something like that.
