I’ve found my people.:blessed:

My neighborhood is pretty competitive with our lawns lol, lots of powered reel mowers. I’ve had one for a few years, love it. Provides a much better cut on certain grasses (Bermuda) than rotary. Think golf course.

Fiskars makes a really good manual reel mower. Lots of work but fun to use.

Ants fukking up my lawn.

Gonna try granules to eliminate the nests. Anyone tried boiling water? I've read it's a popular non-chemical option.
I’ll get ants too, popping up in different times of the year and typically around the perimeter. I’ve been treating them with chemicals tho. I think some people use tobacco as a natural/organic insect control. They soak it in water and spray in gardens and whatnot

Not sure if ants have a bad impact on lawns, but I recently I’ve noticed birds frequently picking at and into my turf, long after reseeding earlier this year so I don’t think it’s seeds/seedlings they’re after. I think they’re feeding on some kind of bug. I read about grubs that feed on the grass roots, and seems consistent with some of my slowed growth, so I applied Sevin granules to control the insects and hoping to see the lawn get more vigorous growth in the back yard. That product has varying reviews on its efficiency for for grubs tho, but I applied it as a catch all. I also notice those “rolly polly” bugs usually around weed roots when I pull them up. Been dealing with what I think is some kind of lawn parsley weed recently that has long roots and spreading like crazy. Pulling that shyt up like regularly now, didn’t have it last year

Dear Lawn care Diary,

Today was the 1st day I noticed widespread new grass growth throughout the lawn after April 28th reseeding. They are so cute!

Have been getting a LOT of rain but on days it hasn't, watered 2x times a day. Temps have been in mid70s and lows in upper 40s and above.

Manual reel mower is great! Use it every other day on parts of lawn not reseeded and it's good exercise :obama: . Like that I can cut grass quietly in eve without loud power motor.

This week, I need to figure out what fertilizer I'm going to put down to support new grass? Feel like im behind schedule on this

I may have looked at that manual reel mower with the chain, forgot it's purpose but believe it was to add additional speed to blade?

Was wary with more parts it would mean more maintenance so went with simpler and cheaper option for now.

So envious u have a power reel mower, what is the blade maintenance like?

How often to sharpen?

I had to compete with my neighbor across the street. What got my yard up to par was:

1. Re-Sod
2. Water regularly (2-3 times a week for 20 mins)
3. pay a lawn care company to weed/feed
4. Cut yard regularly

Yep, the reel on the Fiskars is geared. It turns at a pretty good clip rate for a manual mower. I used it for my primary mower for two full seasons, performed zero maintenance, and it still cuts just fine.

My powered setup is the Allett Kensington, a British brand with a cartridge system. It’s as fun as it looks lol. I have all of the cartridges except one that’s pretty useless for my grass type. Sharpening is super simple—just a drill, socket, and sharpening compound. I have a few reels so I always have a spare sharpened. I usually sharpen each one once or twice a season.
