It’s the transmission, a rebuilt one is between 800-1200 depending where you go and the type of car you got

:why: Can't he just find one in a junkyard and just swap it out???

Yea but that’s risky, a rebuilt one is warranted for at least 6 months(usually 12) and a used transmission cost like 400-500 you have no idea how the used one was taken care of

my trans went out on my regal 9 years ago

On a 97 truck assuming the transmission is original. You are better off just junking it. No repair shop wil buy it and even if you fix it something else will go wrong. It was a good run.

ive seen this quite a few times and honestly w/ transmissions, assuming the mechanic knows what they're doing, you can years and years on a rebuilt transmission. if the truck was otherwise strong and in good condition - and especially if it had costly accessories/additions etc, it may be worth keeping it.

That's the problem a lot of mechanics don't know what they're doing. On top of that a 97 work truck assuming it's a pickup is dealing with all types of wear and corrosion and on top of that RAM trucks of that year are generally garbage he's lucky it lasted this long.

Lacking transmission fluid

There also might be a leak

There also could be a mechanical issue inside the transmission shifter

If it's a bigger problem with any of those 3, get a new car

I had asked that the Coli created a car subforum. I could have sworn they said they'd do it. What happened with that? :jbhmm:
