Bond hype got me rolling through Denis’ filmography again. Sicario is unapologetically bleak and yet still re-watchable at the same time. The script from Sheridan is honestly weak, but just about everything else cooks so hard here. The tension building it evokes really stands out, especially Benicio’s mere presence.
My biggest issue with it upon every watch is Blunt’s character. Part of me likes the idea of someone like Kate being dropped into the middle of a fukked up world and having not a clue how to process such reality, but there’s another part of me wishing she had a little bit more to do here. Kate’s out of her element which is what they were going for…it just comes across as forced. They had her on some kid timeout ish. You could easily replace her character and the film wouldn’t miss a beat.
We lost a GREAT one in Jóhannsson. Things worked out with Hans in Dune but there do be times where I wonder how that score would’ve fared if Jóhann was still alive. Surely he would’ve got the call from his homeboy Denis.
