As a US citizen in the southwest that wants to do business overseas in the next 5-10 years, I want to learn a couple of other languages (at least enough to get buy and have a chance to submerge my self in the culture of another land without a translator or heavy dependence on a dictionary and blind luck). Spanish seems pretty obvious and I already know a fair amount from being in the street.

Which ones do you know? Which have helped you the most? Is there a language that you know that hasn't helped you at all? Do you focus more on writing or speaking? etc.

You're already sharing your credit card at target, come on down and share information about the benefits of foreign conjugations :takedat:

If you wanna make dough.... Arabic and Chinese

EDT: I just speak Spanish....

More specifically Mandarin-Chinese dialect. oure gonna be dealing with alot of Chinese in the future.

i was thinking about japanese or chinese. i really want to go to japan because i have some peeps over there already and i'm sort of into their culture.

the other type of chinese is cantonese? idk. what's the difference and is it worth it to learn the others?

and how hard is arabic? when i hear it, it all sounds the same.

With Arabic and the Asian languages, you are going for the top tier in difficulty. It's best that you start those languages early in life because it takes even the smartest of people many years to learn and you will most definitely spend the rest of your life learning it if you start late. Cantonese is the Chinese most commonly spoken by Chinese-American immigrants in their Chinatown neighborhoods and the southern provinces of China. It's the oldest of the Chinese dialects and the hardest. Cantonese has 9 tones and Mandarin has 4 tones.

I'm a hard worker so I can probably make it happen, but I've heard that Chinese was one of the hardest to learn as an adult. I'm really still leaning towards Japanese especially after seeing the smog in Shanghai :pachaha:

I was also contemplating Portuguese because I've been looking at that G20 list sort of hard lately. I've got dreams of marrying an Avon lady. :takedat:

I'd say (and not to be rude) that maybe a language isn't something that you need, but perhaps a bit more common sense. Every language is worth learning because every language is in use.

As for being the most useful, that depends on where you're at. If I'm in Russia then Russian will do me best and Spanish will do me least. If I'm in Mexico Spanish will do me best and Russian will do me least.

Depends on what you want to do and where you want to be. If you plan on staying in the US then you might as well learn no other languages.

well i plan on traveling a lot before it's all said and done but i'm starting school and i need to pick a language for my major. that's one of my motives for this thread. my school makes you focus on an area and learn a language to complete the degree.

I would say spanish if you're conducting business in America.

I'm taking Japanese classes next year

I'mma keep it real with you.... You're not going to make much more money with Spanish unless you own your own business that caters to Spanish-speaking people or teach English in Spanish speaking countries. The Latinos have a monopoly over the good jobs that pay extra for Spanish fluency and they aren't coming off those jobs.

Go with Japanese or one of the other Asian languages.

Tbh, I wouldn't learn a language because of business and all that other bullshyt. That's how nikkas end up unhappy, study the language of a culture that you're genuinely interested in.

It makes life far more enjoyable and way less stressful.
