Good article

...but this is why I stand and why we all should stand for the national anthem...as you've said
It is difficult to talk about in public, and easier to just go about our collective business.
I challenge you to mention a topic/subject that hasn't been talked about in public..after a few moments to ponder an answer, we should then reason whether the problem is the topic/subject not being publicly talked about
OR
is it that folks have the luxury and privilege that comes with living in the USA (greatest country in the World), to just go about our collective business. This is why I stand

I stand to show respect to the USA because I could exercise the 3 kinds of fawks at my discretion. The act between consenting adults, to be interested, or not to be interested about something/somebody

I stand not to ignore or cosign the "wrongs" done by the government and citizens, but to co-sign the USA principles that all men are created equal, endowed with certain unalienable Rights like Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness

Though there are citizens trying to undermine these principles, why disrespect the flag and national anthem because of their negative actions, while ignoring those who believe in those principles, are committed and actively striving to sustain and foster these principles?

Colin Kaepernick also sits for the concepts of community and societal responsibility, both of which are lost on the very people who disingenuously demand Kaepernick respect the interconnectedness of our United States by demonstrating a reflexive fealty to the flag while simultaneously asking how much money he has given to “his” community to shame him out of expressing empathy
In this social media world where it's difficult to distinguish trolls, catfishers, attention whores, and sincerity, the most effective tool to use with filtering among these types is by judging whether a person's action speaks louder than their words

As much as I want to believe in Colin's motives and salute his social media activities to highlight black plight, not standing for the anthem does nothing to determine whether he is really about Black empowerment. Having any person, regardless of color, say "there is discrimination in USA," does not prove whether he/she is for/against discrimination. And it certainly doesn't indicate their commitment level to fighting against discrimination, which is more important than rhetoric

Just like some of us get frustrated by the annual "discussion panels to address problems facing black people," because we view it as more rhetoric and not action, then some of us asking Colin how much has he "invested" in the black community is not an attempt to shame him out of expressing empathy, but to filter his sincerity

Kaepernick sits because critical discussion and dissent must never be squashed under the foot of the empty nationalism that emerges in a culture of permanent war.
:salute:

Colin Kaepernick sits because he is a team player; he understands his guaranteed millions don’t exempt him from caring about the psychic health of his country and the plight of the underclass. This is a principled and noble stand, not an arrogant one

If we really support and want to help Colin and believe in Black empowerment, then we would not want him to sacrifice his career, his ability to earn, and his family's security and safety by sacrificing for a cause to help a community that the majority of its members wouldn't do

In between the members of the "Black community" co-signing Colin's actions, showing social media support for him and further justifying their own reasons for not standing for the national anthem, we are
making car payments,
planning vacation trips,
planning the next medical checkup,
researching the next new tech gadget to buy,
binge watching TV shows/ movies,
getting groomed for their next social
researching for their fantasy draft
playing their video games

In other words, we have gears of consciousness that's afforded to us because we live in a country that provides opportunities to better foods, socializing, jobs, and entertainment. So we effortlessly shift between motivation to do trivial acts or to doing humanitarian efforts. This is why I stand

I don't want anymore Malcolm X, MLK, Garvey etc or any black individual to be the focus of white supremacy fury, while the rest of us are sideline quarterbacking and social media supporting, while not committing our time, financial support, or sacrificing anything to compliment their efforts

In America, a high-paying job is a right for some, but a “privilege” to many others — rhetoric naked in its racism.
Colin Kaepernick sits for the American Dream. Colin Kaepernick is the American Dream. Or, at least, he’s what we like to pretend it is.
Making millions of dollars in entertainment is a privilege that is afforded to some of us via the American dream and because of the mechanics of social mobility
