Nothing too interesting, just been called a racist and an idiot. Standard stuff. Thanks for reading and sharing it with people, y'all. Much appreciated. I'd cop a CK jersey, but since the money won't go to him, I've got to think about how to get a homemade version.
:jbhmm:

I thought they got royalties from jersey sales. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Flames. Its always funny how white folks (and some black folks tbf) think being half white or raised in a white suburb somehow protects you from racism rather than giving you a front row seat to it...

"We took you in and this is how you treat us :damn:"

Him being raised as a darker child with 2 white parents he was obviously adopted so I can only imagine the shyt he used to hear.

The crazy part about Kaep is that he had all the makings to be a full fledged c00n. Grew up in white neighborhoods, raised by white patents, never knew his black father, but somehow still was self aware enough to recognize his pro blackness:wow:

:wow: shyt is absolutely mystifying

Imagine the racism he had to deal with growing up breh. My. Nephew lives in a white neighborhood and I had to tell him to smack those lil cacs around until theyear him. Students were harassing him and calling him names but no teacher supported him. Oh they were playing. Once he started handing out dem beats he got expelled and blackballed. Now he goes to a private Christian school 10 miles away.

Guess who's his fave athlete is now ? Carmelo Anthony.

Kaep gives no fukks, it's like he knew his career was going to be over so he said fukk it

This is the only chit about this matter that gets me hot; ppeople acting like Colin Kaepernick is grandstanding
because his "star" is faded - like this is the only time he's taken a stand of this type (pardon the pun).

And the worst truth in this article is the last paragraph.
There is no end in sight, because yes - It is "difficult to talk about in public, and easier to just go about our collective business. But either we rise to the challenge of having these difficult, painful conversations, or we sink beneath layers of avoidance, rationalizations, and ethical compromise."

The reason is because it has become increasingly difficult to talk about anything in public with a flesh-and-blood person.
Our "conversations" tend to be one-sided blocks of whatever few characters we can fit in a box on social media, often times
extracted from context. All conversation is seen as "difficult" and "painful".

Ah well.

Great article. I remember how much I enjoyed your writing when you were talking about your days as a college athlete.

Do you ever get thoughtful/articulate responses from people who disagree with you? And do you ever respond to people?

I've always been interested in the behind the scenes aspect of being a writer. I read Deadspin a lot and the writers over there troll the ignorant commenters but they engage with guys who legitimately try to discuss things.

@Walt

The nasty reactions prove his freedom and societal value are contingent on him playing his expected part in the bread and circus of professional football. Once he stepped outside of his role as spectacle, the illusion of his freedom was revealed and replaced by calls for censorship. His critical, independent thought became an affront, rather than a virtue.

Instead of a hardworking, ultra-talented success story, Kaepernick has been cast as an ungrateful charity case who should be happy someone pays him a salary. In America, a high-paying job is a right for some, but a “privilege” to many others — rhetoric naked in its racism. The expected exchange for success should not be silence and acquiescence. Colin Kaepernick sits for his and our right to have a voice
.
