Come to think of it, Allen Iverson was outplayed in every matchup during his run to the 2001 NBA Finals.

I only have a problem with the "AI carried a bunch of bums to the Finals" narrative when ever this comes up. He deserved the MVP that year but that Sixers team also included that season's Defensive Player of the Year, 6th Man of the Year and Coach of the Year.

The rest of the team gets bashed too much. They were a very good defensive team.

I don’t knock AI for shooting so much, that was his job and Larry Brown said he wanted AI to shoot even more. Without AI, they would have been terrible offensively. With AI, they became an average team offensively. He deserves a lot of credit for carrying the team on offense.

But the rest of the team was really good defensively, look at how well they played against the Bucks. AI had a terrible series shooting the ball before game 6, but Philly was still up 3-2. Milwaukee was kind of the opposite of the Sixers, they were strong offensively but weaker defensively.

AI stans are gonna neg you but they won’t have an argument to disprove you. :mjlol:

Sixers got to the Finals because of their defense, not because AI chucking 35 shots on 38% shooting. Yet his stans try pass it off as him carrying a “trash” team.

AI can’t co-exist with other skilled players (Stackhouse, Igoudala, Melo, etc..). So the Sixers built the only type of team he could succeed with; a defense first team that allowed AI to chuck up as many shots as he wanted.

It’s no coincidence that 2001 was the only year that he had any playoff success.

Yea, a playoff run where you average:
  • 33ppg
  • on 30 shots per game,
  • shooting 38%

And make it to the Finals is wild :dead:

It's why context is always needed. Give Sixers their props for beating who was in front of them but when we bash other players (i.e. Westbrook, Harden, etc) for not getting it done in the playoffs often due to shyt shooting on some 40% ish and say they don't have the heart or ability to carry a team like Iverson did... as if the Sixers won the title...

...or as if Vince Carter with a 33yr Antonio Davis, 37yr old Charles Oakley, 36yr Dell Curry, 33yr Chris Childs, and a rookie Mo Peterson...

...equates the same margin of error as facing the '14 Spurs, '15-'19 Warriors, '20 Lakers, etc., :mjlol:

Reggie Miller: 31.5/5/2 46% shooting
Vince Carter: 30.4/6/5.6 47% shooting
Ray Allen: 27/5/3 on 47/50/90
KOBE: 24/7/5

Iverson outplayed kobe but as for the rest? :childplease:

When was AI the primary defender on a SG?

I remember him defending PGs and you put a bigger body in Snow or McKie on the SG.

AI outplayed the guys he defended....

B-b-b-but did you watch the games?

Yeah...and we saw Reggie and Vince drop 30 on The Answer :picard:

shyt if you giving up 30 what's the question :picard:

Once again....
Iverson guarded PGs and got in passing lanes.

Iverson out his own mouth said Kobe and the like was too big for him to guard. Snow, McKie, Bell, Lynch guarded those guys.

Sixers were the second best team in the league that year and it’s reflected in how hard the Lakers had to play after they destroyed everyone else. The Lakers beat the Spurs by a double digit per game average but only beat the Sixers by a 6 point average. Games 2 and 3 were within a single bucket in the 4th.

Aaron Mckie was also injured going into the finals and we probably get a closer series if he’s healthy.

AI gets more respect for that single win then other players do for whole rings :russ:

People here were trying to use AI’s 01’ run to argue he was better than Curry :mjlol:

What's his biggest career highlight? When he crossed over MJ twice or when he stepped over Ty Lue? :jbhmm:

I would say the stepover.

Those are the most famous or “iconic”, but he’s got a lot of highlights that are much better to me.

Look at those insane putback dunks at #9, #7, and #5. He has much better crossover highlights too than the one on MJ.
