Intimate yet expansive in its depiction of his Windy City, Be is Common’s return to his street-poet roots after the quirky Electric Circus. There’s a starkly real yet ultimately positive worldview throughout, because Common brings as much thoughtfulness to a track about gangbanging (“The Corner”) as he does the gorgeous self-love anthem “It’s Your World.” It’s the equivalent of listening to riveting stories from your pops . . . but over a soulful, scratchy beat.

At least in my opinion.

The problem isn't with Common's lyrics or flow, I think he's pretty well in those areas. However, when we're concerning about his beats on this project alone, we gotta agree it's fukking trash. The best beats on this were "Love Is.." and "It's your world"... I was getting sick of Kanye's sampling and it just made the hooks pretty atrocious.

It's not a bad album by any means, just not that good.

One of the worst takes I’ve ever seen

I'm wholly convinced people blow this album out of proportion because of Kanye's meteoric rise and Chappelle's Show popularity happening at the same time when it released.

Album is softer than fresh shyt

I agree with this part, but it is still a good album.

Listening to it now, there was nothing particularly mind blowing about the album. The beats were dope. The lyrics were dope. It was consistent and cohesive. A lot of people felt this was a classic. I'm not one of those people.

Nah. It's one of those albums that's extremely cohesive. One on the last few I could say okay that's a 5 mic classic like stillmatic, blueprint, etc. After Be I don't think I had that feeling until Kanye's fantasy album and since then I find it hard to name one.

It was a product of the hype of it’s time. It’s a 4 out of 5 when you get down to the music

There were other records around that time that did deserve higher honors though such as The B Coming and Game Theory
