Imo rpgs, especially jrpgs are something you had to get into when you were younger around SNES/PSX era. If you missed the boat on it then it’s gone.

I think some people got into them with final fantasy 10 but that’s probably the latest cutoff point.
100% facts. They were pushing graphics at the time but working with the limitations of the hardware. Turn-based, random battles, save points. Those things don't age well.

Now every damn game has RPG stats but no hardware limitations. If you like retro games you might be into it, but it's a product of it's time.

Played a bit of FF7 on an Eidos demo disc for PC back in the late 90s; that’s the extent of my FF experience. I plan to get into the series and RPGs in general though. Played Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and had a great time. Currently playing through XC Remake.

By this point trying to go back and play one of the old turn based FF's would be like torture to you probably. I suggest just getting FF7 Remake and starting there, then wait until FFXVI drops.

6,7,8 are good entry points the rest will probably bore you.

9 felt like some shyt from the Disney channel. I’ve tried to get into it multiple times over the years but I lose interest in the high medieval light steampunk fantasy theme. I prefer the more futuristic themed games in the series.

10 was cool when it came out, but it’s difficult to play now because it’s so outdated.

If you enjoy turn based, medieval themes then look into 1-5

11 is a no-go

12 is about the same as 10, but a little less interesting

13 was garbage, basically a hallway simulator

14 is only I couldn’t get into it

15 started strong but loses steam pretty early on

I have high hopes for 16. If I was you, OP I’d wait for 16.

I played and completed 9 a while ago, and I could never understand the love it gets. It must have been one of those "You had to be there" type joints.

It seemed way too goofy and whimsical

12 is probably the least dated classic FF game honestly. It plays much like a game that isnout currently.
