Yep, definitely sounds like it's time to start looking and considering a lateral move.

Not to play the "race card" but the times we live in might be a factor. A lot of white people in power are mad about Obama being reelected, or mad because they feel like lazy black people are driving their taxes up, members of the Tea Party, etc. and might choose to express that by not promoting black employees. I'd like to think it's not the case but truth is it's a possibility that somebody up the chain of command is one of those types. And if that's the case you'll never be able to prove it, so might be time to go.

Sounds like you have very good qualifications so hopefully finding another job isn't too hard if you decide to go that route.

What if they don't see him succeeding or his doesn't fit the mold? It's difficult being black in these situations because we can truly never tell the motive behind the moves being made. But again, racism exists, so do your best to not fit the stereotype and proceed to make positive careers moves for yourself.

Fact is, it is extremely difficult for anyone to move up that ladder. Not always about race. I've seen white folks go bat shyt crazy for me once they discovered my talent and work ethic. I can honestly say that mentors from all races have stepped up and embraced me. I'm 6'8" by the way, so I'm big and black. Move past it and control what you can control.

"We all know that my boy."

"I may be many things sir, but I am not your boy."

Power, not skin color.

Breh, don't listen to the people telling you to just stay at this job and hope things will get better. Based on what you've told us, you need to start looking for a new job ASAP. Just don't leave your current job until you have something else lined up.

Hope got nothing to do with it. We are talking about taking actual steps to improve.

If you're a follower (nothing wrong with that per say) then simply look for another job (unless the industry you're in is majorly racist).

If you're a leader then start your own business and employ other black people (assuming you're black).

UPDATE:

So, something fishy may be going on. I reached out to both the director and the hiring manager with a typical, 'Thank you for the opportunity, etc'. They both reply back with, 'It was a pleasure to meet with you' and then one of the goes even further and says, 'We'd like for you to be a part of a project we have coming up and can you spare 6-7 hours a week away from your role to assist us.'

Now, when I got my feedback, my boss intercepted it and all the criticisms were really generic. So I never heard from the director or the manager themselves about what they didn't like. It was all through my immediate superior.

If they thought I was trash, why are they asking me to be a part of a really important project if they felt my perspective and input wouldn't be useful to the department?

I've got my conspiracy theory hat on, and I'm trying not to get too upset or worked up.

I've seen folks take on massive amounts of additional work/projects in hopes of promotions/raises and be strung along for years with management never coming through with their promises.
These people aren't going to take care of you. Continue to get your experience up, update your resume, and don't hesitate to keep moving on to better opportunities.

Conform like no one has ever conformed before and get that money
Hes not getting the money. In corporate culture the vultures are circling. He can redeem himself. That requires him laying his manager out. She has probably been under the gun before. Some folks are meant to be cannibals.

Not that simple when you're at the junior level. I know it sounds good, but starting a business without a solid skill set and contact sheet is unlikely to yield a positive result (unless he has something really innovative to bring forth).

Right. So by now you should realize a couple of things.

1. Anyone who suggested you just up and leave, or that you should not save your best work for a director or higher up, does not know what they are talking about.

2. This is your opportunity. If you have the director's ear, show you best work, log long hours, network as much as possible, and use this as leverage to obtain the position which you were previously denied. On top of that, if you gain the director's ear and network correctly, your direct boss will not have a say in whether you are promoted or not. Someone higher will be watching over you.

Excellent post. This is why you don't want to be a "superstar." You aim high initially, but not enough to have management feel they can abuse your talent and work ethic. After about six months, produce consistent, above-average content and play office politics.

Yeah that cycle of events would prompt me to find a different job, ASAP. They were being tactless a$$holes, and that question was completely uncalled for.

Another thing about professionals is that they can be VERY specific when they want to be, please believe if you were ducking up and they needed a reason to bring you up on charges they'd have a rap sheet with every off-attribute notated to the t, but they deny you a promotion and get generic about it? Please.

I'm not saying it's racial either, that stuff happens to ALL races, but it might be,I don't know. I'd look for a different/better paying job though and quit with no notice in the middle of whatever project, and then give them a generic reason as to why I need to leave ASAP. When they ask why you couldn't give notice, just tell them that's what conformists do, and you're thinking out of the box.
