The cold war eneded too soon. All of these things were the result of competition between soviets and america. Once soviets left the stage, there was no motivation for the us to do any of that sht. If gorbachav ignored reagan's silly "tear down that wall" provacations and sent a rocket to mars, i garuntee you the US govt would have a space base on alpha Centauri by now.

We missed all that futuristic stuff.

Now im p retty sure we wont do anything cool even in our future because if VR. Why on earth would i invent a flying car and pay for billions of dollars in research, when i could spend a weekend coding a digital car and charge people to run the program?

Both nations, however, were working within a framework conditioned by the past. Ultimately, the rivalry between the two superpowers stemmed from their different historical perspectives and their irreconcilable political ambitions. Intense competition for political and military supremacy had long been a regular feature of Western civilization. The United States and the Soviet Union were the heirs of that European tradition of power politics, and it should not surprise us that two such different systems would seek to extend their way of life to the rest of the world.
Sound familiar?
