This. I do think there will probably be a vaccine eventually, but not in the very near future. It's just not a fast process.
A year or two is possible but not probable even with a lot of people working on it. Realistically we might be a decade out.
We create the most innovation when an economy is on the line and our way of life is challenged, and that is what is happening here (think advancements after WWI or WWII from technology developed during the war). To me, everything in this world is based on economic outlook, and is cold about our world. If these numbers produced about 5-10 million people dying around the world and then everyone has herd immunity, they would do it and we would never have had this lockdown.
If Covid-19 was a debilitating disease that you manage with, they would come with "medicines to prolong life" and bleed a person of money till they couldnt get a dollar more (I am type one diabetic, I have heard about cures and science logic that makes sense for 10 years now, never comes... But they are emerging every day with sensors and pumps that help us manage it better, but we still pay that money every 3 months for supplies.)
But, Covid-19 threatens way of life, and it will mess up the money for those that have power. That cant be afforded, the number one phrase of the west world really is "business as usual" This is disrupting business, and you can bet every resource ever imaginable will be thrown to get this figured out to return to a way of life. Now whether thats a vaccine, or a treatment, or an efficient to save lives using technology by tracking, I dont know, but there is too much power to be lost by those who dont want to lose it to let this continue on for a prolong period of time.
Also, the testing is going to take a lot of risk and I am sure will be dirty.. We wont hear these stories though
