The Pentagon said the Comfort, one of the hospital ships designated to help with the coronavirus crisis, is receiving maintenance and will not be ready to go for weeks.

Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Rath Hoffman said officials are trying to expedite the maintenance process, so the Comfort can get to New York and provide hospital beds to the city as it battles coronavirus.

The Mercy, which is supposed to go to the west coast, will be ready much more quickly, Hoffman said.

Both ships are expected to assist hospitals by taking some non-coronavirus cases and hopefully prevent a shortage of hospital beds.

Nah, it says they'll be taking non-corona patients. But hopefully at least a temperature check is taken before they board them.

Another important thing to note - the Po Valley in northern Italy (mostly overlapping Lombardy, etc.) is the most polluted corridor in Western Europe. Air quality in Milan is regularly terrible, and that entire region is the industrial heartland of Italy - think coal/natural gas power plants, agriculture, manufacturing, etc.

These problems are exacerbated not only by Italy's older demographics but the air quality - where there are high amounts of pollution, there are higher rates of asthma and other respiratory illnesses. Makes sense in China as well - Wuhan is the economic center of Central China, and there is lots of manufacturing in the surrounding area, not to mention coal-fired power plants as well.

Our treatment of our environment will undoubtedly make this pandemic worse - even Covid notwithstanding, WHO says that almost 5 million people die from pollution-related illnesses every year worldwide.
