Death Row Records in particular was about that life. nikkas were getting rob, shot, beaten up, music engineers would get fukked about if they did something they were not suppose to do, Nate Dogg said that a rapper once walked in Suge's meeting and wanted to get signed and Suge said if he they didn't like what they heard they would fukk him up....and they ended up beating his ass up....hell Pac, Suge, and some bloods fukked up one of Diddy's boy in LA....shyt was crazy in the 90's. Drake would have been snuffed in the 90's by everyone.

Mase was still gritty with it tho. nikkas was at that Only You remix verse. Drake is holding back with the softness. Hes not even full blown cotton candy with it right now.

Whatever "grittiness" Mase had was just residual stuff from his murda mase days and wasn't what his draw or image was centered around by the time Puff was done grooming him for his solo album...Drake's current rnb hybrid style came along fairly late in his development (So Far Gone) and is based on trends that didn't exist back in the 90's, at his core he was originally a fairly standard issue post-jigga pretty boy swagger rapper....you build a time machine, drop off Comeback Season era Drake at Bad Boy studios in '97, and Puff makes him a star...slight gimmick shift is all that would be needed, same thing he did with Mase but from the opposite direction and towards a common center

Vanilla Ice went diamond but nobody took him seriously. I doubt Drake fans would want him to have that kind of career considering the pedestal they put him on today.
