boosters to trigger the creation of more anti-bodies. the number of antibodies in your body naturally diminishes over time when an antigen isn't detected. the objective is maintain a certain level of anti-bodies in your system until this pandemic is over. a person can choose not to get a booster shot but as the number of antibodies dwindle overtime, they could get covid while the number of antibodies is extremely low and by the time their immune system is aware theres a covid infection(for a unknown amount of time) it'll take days to produce the anti-bodies to fight it off. this is why monoclonal treatment is given to people within the first 10 days of testing positive for covid, it's lab-made anti-bodies.
