Good question. He's half Puerto Rican and his mom is Honduran, and he favors more his Honduran side. I say that to say, he always had that strong ass central American work ethic.

He started cutting at Caspers Cuts (still there, you can Google it), and would work every day after school from like 3:30 to 8:00, 8:30 Monday through Thursday. On Friday's and Saturdays...he would work until late on Fridays....like 10:30, 11:00. Saturdays he would work from like 10:00am to 10:00 to 11:00pm, sometimes midnight.

This was the era of low cut caesar fades...so everyone was constantly getting lined up, especially during the mid to late 90s, when staying fresh was of utmost importance.

The barbershop was a hood hangout, with a pool table in the back. So, most of us were hanging out there anyway, smoking in the front and then going to play pool and have a beer in the back. He didn't even touch weed until his 30s.

After he graduated high school, he was working at the shop 6 days a week, sometimes 7. Monday through thursdays he would work generally from 2:00pm to around 7:30, 8:00. Friday and Saturdays he was easily putting in 12-14 hour days. He was putting in an insane amount of hours from like 18 to 30. Everyone in our hood knew him as the kid who worked harder than any other barber. My dude had a condo AND a range at 21. He was able to save all his money, before getting his condo, because he lived with his mom and sister in a low rent stabilized apartment.

At 30, he left Casper's Cuts and went to Dyker Heights and opened up his own Barbershop called Amenities. He hooked it up and made it look upscale and was getting that Italian and Arab money from clients in Dyker Heights.

He got into Sanitation a few years ago. He still cuts and works for DSNY. Also has tenants in his two family. We all know those dudes who just chased money and were great at it. He's one of those.

@Raw Lyrics great and insightful post, thanks for breaking it down! Has he suffered any wear and tear on his body similar to other blue collar professions via putting so much work into it?

The president fires a ton of black public servants and rolls back civil rights protections to purposely cut down on the amount of black, white collar workers in the public and private sector and then we hear these “Barbers are the best paying jobs for black people”.

If I was more paranoid I would say these types of threads was disinformation to encourage black people away from jobs where they compete with white people…..

It takes years for a barber to build his clientle and possibly own his own shop. The barbers you see with the courtside tickets are most likely the shop owner. And they probably cut a few celebrity heads at that for about $100 each.

Popular Barbers do make more, but they have to work for every minute they get paid. 6 figure IT is like 2 hours of work and just shooting the shyt lmao. You also get PTO, vacation, bonuses etc.

THESE bytchES HAD MY WHIP FOR
3 WEEKS LAST MONTH.

I THOUGHT IT WAS PERSONAL
BUT THE TITLE OF THIS VID
JUST ENLIGHTENED ME

These companies wanted to pay mechanics, truck drivers etc as less money as possible. And then wonder why there is a labor shortage decades later.

I know several plumbers, HVAC guys, and electricians and none of them are balling. They make enough money to take care of their family, save, and go on vacations, which is great. I think this is exaggerated like the rich nurses thing. Yeah, they make good money for the most part but balling is a stretch for the large large majority.

Last time I asked him about repetitive motion injuries, was more than 10 years ago and he told me he didn't suffer any real issues. His emphasized the importance of having a comfortable mat to stand on all day when cutting hair.

With that said, working for the New York City Department of Sanitation is extremely rough on his body. He tore his Achilles while working and you'd be surprise at the amount of injuries sanitation workers face due to improperly packed garbage (think protruding glass shards and the like). Also, you're at high risk for heart and lung issues, as well as eye infections. And they also have to work in the worst weather conditions. That 200k they get comes at a price.

People will always need a hair cut/style.

Very few people need a Six Sigma Scrum Master Programmer who's fluent in JavaScript, CSS, and COBOL. :mjlol:
:mjlol:

Scrum master programmer? That don't even make no sense

But if you do software development, it's not difficult to do work on the side. All you need is your computer. People have app idea everywhere. And with AI now, you don't even have to outsource to someone on Fiverr, you can just have AI do most of the work

@Raw Lyrics so basically your friend had to sacrifice not watching TV, sports, movies, getting with women, hobbies, etc, etc while he was working 14 hours a day everyday??

Also, is he married with a family currently??

Shortage of skilled laborers is why. Perfect time to build unions and fight for more socialist policies so that when more skilled people come in they don't get exploited the employer like before
