Gen Z is ditching college for ‘more secure’ trade jobs—but building inspectors, electricians and plumbers actually have the worst unemployment

My mom talked me into to going to Nursing school. Probably one of best decisions I ever made. I originally was just gonna try to be a barber or truck driver.

Healthcare only truly safe field. If anyone ask me about what career to get into it’ll always be healthcare. Nurses, Respiratory therapist, speech therapist, PT/OT. Nurses and orher staff in hospitals can’t be replaced by AI. Nursing school competitive to get into but you shouldn’t be buried in debt paying for that degree. Been an RN for 7 years make $120,000 a year in Houston. Living comfortably

Education also has alot of opportunities if you’re good/can tolerate kids. The entry to being a teacher is pretty low. Literally a certificate program and you can be a full time teacher. Wont ever be rich but solid long term career

Yeah my mom is pushing me to go into ultrasound/ct scan/etc.

Healthcare is ALWAYS gonna be there.

I'm just realizing something if people aren't buying homes and doing more renting property rental and management have their own in house maintenance. So independent plumbers and electricians wont have a lot of work

Good point. I think there will still be opportunity since a lot of rental properties aren’t owned by “corporate” companies.

Even owners of buildings with property managers will still hire independent trade people

I’m a PM in a specialized construction trade. Our laborers have to be union, licensed and pass annual certifications. Journeyman wage is $50+/hr

A part of my job is trying my damndnest to get younger people into the industry because majority of the laborers are 35+. I’m generalizing but I’m unsure if Gen Z really wants to grind in some of these trades

You are thinking backwards. Rental property maintenance is a starter type job for maintenance people. You are going to work your tail off. You want to be independent with your own business as a repair man. You can choose your work time. There's plenty of houses and other places that will need repair work.

Gotta stop telling the yutes the work force is all peaches and creams. Whatever you do is gonna be tough.

I have a homie who wants to get into nursing because "there's a demand for nurses" but he's not understanding how hard the curriculum is and how competitive the job market for a good nursing job is.

Even in trades, to find a good apprenticeship and not just some lazy bum who has you standing around for 10h a day then complains that you don't do anything is tough to find.

Not to mention people going into nursing because they’re trying to avoid stress.

Try walking into a room full of loved family members watching your every move. Nursing is high pressure, nothing easy about it.

We need to stop recommending people to be Nurses who don’t have the right mentality for it. It takes a very certain kind of individual who’s going to make it in that field.

One of the best, most secure fields if you can do it. IF you can do it.

It’s a bad field if someone wants something “chill”. There’s a reason why it’s secure work.

New technologies like prefabrication and robotics are starting to take over parts of the workload, which can reduce demand,” Lupo explained.

Just like office workers who are experiencing mass layoffs and are at the mercy of recessions, rate hikes, and demand, so too are tradies.

“Trade jobs are closely tied to industries like construction and manufacturing, which means they are sensitive to changes in the economy. When these industries slow down, projects often get delayed or canceled, which can lead to job losses,” Lupo added.

“On top of that, some trade jobs are seasonal, which means that bad weather or off-peak months can dry up construction and maintenance work for several weeks.”
Of course, not everyone is becoming a tradie for the money. Gen Zers previously told Fortune that a key element is having the freedom to be their own boss and not be chained to a desk.

also tariffs. if raw materials are expensive development slows

Yeah, I agree with the bolded.

Nurses generally became successful nurses because they genuinely cared for people. If youre just doing it as just a gig, then :francis:

It is also a serious profession. Just like Doctors, nurses are literally next in line.

Watching Nip/Tuck years ago had me realizing how hard/complicated/important a nurse like a Surgical Nurse actually is.. as well as how dangerous/stressful the job can be.

And they can make well over 200k on average (CRNAs make the most according to AI). But thats not a job you do for the money, they pay that much because of how serious and hard it is.

Giving that kind of responsibility to un-serious people is disaster waiting to happen.
