So he should stay and have his wife verbally accosted or have confederate flags placed in his front yard? All of which I've heard happened while he was there. Did you hear about that
@BigSteve ?
I never heard about ANY of that. This is my understanding of how things happened.
Cuonzo takes UT job, fans were confused as to how he was (we don't have a high-IQ fan base), but they were enthusiastic moving forward because we still had a lot of talent in the cupboard.
Year one - NIT, no one is really upset though as the team showed promise. The team was up and down all year. Beat all of the teams that they were supposed to blow out, but lost to all of the teams that they had a good chance to beat. For much of the season, they were up and down, until the end of the year when they picked it up, but fell just short of the tournament because other bubble teams claimed spots by winning their must-win games. UT fans weren't really unreasonable about this because it was his first season, and there was some promise and hope built by barely missing the tournament.
Going into year two there were a lot of expectations for UT considering the talent level that Martin and the Vols had to work with. An NCAA appearance seemed likely.
Came out seemingly poised to make a name for themselves early, then lost to several tournament-level teams. Then struggled through much of SEC schedule, until finishing the season off strong, but leaving their seeding and tournament hopes in the hands of the selection committee. The mark of the season was that every time it seemed that UT turned a corner, they would lose to a team that they absolutely HAD to beat. Towards the end of the season, they had a chance to snatch a spot to the tourney, but other teams on the bubble showed up when they had to, or had a better resume against other eligible teams. Finished just outside of the 68 teams selected for the tournament.
Finishing just outside of the tournament was frustrating for most fans, considering they had the same players that they had for this year's run, but kept falling short. CBB pundits would always pick UT to upset a big team, or they would talk about how UT was underachieving or could be so much better. WHAT I REMEMBER about the end of last season was Jordan McRae seemingly getting snubbed for SEC Player of the Year and UT getting snubbed from a tournament appearance. That was the view by most fans. "How could ESPN do this to Tennessee!?!?" Even though ESPN doesn't vote for tournament teams or POY awards, UT fans blame everything on ESPN. Why didn't Manning win the Heisman? Hint: ESPN.
Then the off-season happened and people turned our mediocre players into great players, and great players into HOFers. A lot of Tennessee fans (keep in mind most of our BB fans weren't fans before Pearl) started to make up their minds that 13-14 was a prove-it year for Martin.
Going into the 13-14 season, Tennessee was supposed to make some noise. This would be the last season with Stokes and Maymon - the big body duo that was supposed to make life hell for opponents down low. This was also Jordan McRae's senior season, and he was UT Michael Jordan. A tournament appearance was a foregone conclusion. Games of note (in order): at Xavier L, UTEP L, vs Xavier W, at Wich St L, NC State L, Virginia W. This early part of the schedule is a lot of the reason why UT ended up as an 11 seed. The inconsistency is inspiring at times, but mostly confusing. How could a team that stomped an eventual #1 seed lose to a team like UTEP? The committee barely let in NC State, who UT lost to. It's hard to get into the tourney when you don't make a name for yourself against OOC opponents.
The conference schedule was up and down (as it was previous years), and it seemed that the team couldn't get up for big games. In a year where the SEC was supposed to be dog shyt, a lot of the fans were complaining that Martin should have been beating teams like Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Missouri (who the Vols all lost to). The Vols never separated from the pack to prove their position as an elite team deserving of a tournament bid.
Feb 11 - Vols lose to Florida for a second time. Because of the perceived weakness of the SEC, that would be the final team that Tennessee would face that would give them a chance to boost their RPI ratings in hopes of reaching the tournament. ESPN, CBS, SBNation, BleacherReport, anyone that considered themselves a college ball expert DID NOT have UT in the tournament. The best that they were looking at were Last Four Out. It was apparent that they had a lot of work to do.
Every game from here on out featured a "win or you're out" theme. The announcers would talk about it on nationally televised games, the sportswriters were inking about it. It was everywhere. The level-headed fans weren't falling for the hype, because they knew that it really wasn't do-or-die. It's college basketball, shyt happens all the time, and Martin could still get to the tournament. However, the sidewalk fans that got their coaching PhD during the Pearl Era here really bought into the hype. Even though it was a ratings and clicks ploy from media outlets, the fans were eating it up. WE HAVE TO WIN! CUONZO BETTER DO IT!
-Feb 15 - in the very next game, ESPN built up the fact that Tennessee had to win in their pre-game shows. They were comfortable saying that Martin was on the hot seat. Tennessee ended up losing the game. It was a huge blow to the support for Martin.
-Feb 18 - the deflated spirit of the Vols fan base was suddenly uplifted by a win over Georgia, a team that was also in a similar Last Four Out position.
-in the meantime, other bubble teams were shytting the bed, opening up a spot for UT to move up
-Feb 22 - seeming poised to snatch a spot and move up in rankings, Tennessee loses to Texas A&M for the second time in the season. This would ultimately prove to be the nail in the coffin for most Vols Basketball fans. Tennessee was looking like a lock for a third straight NIT appearance. The tournament seemed out of reach at this point, and the elephant in the room could no longer be avoided.
ENTER THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM. Bruce Pearl was still living in Tennessee, he was still perceived to be the lifeblood of Tennessee Volunteers Basketball. He took Vols Basketball to new heights, and his glory days were suddenly a hot topic again now that his show-clause was going to be up. If Martin had made a third straight NIT, surely the administration would fire him and we would have a position open. Who better to take his spot than Bruce Pearl? Some fans started a petition to rehire Pearl following the Georgia loss, but no one really paid it any mind. After the second A&M loss, and the perceived loss of a tournament bid, the petition made its rounds BIG TIME. It was on the radio, it was on TV, it was in blogs, it was in major articles. It was receiving backing from guys at CBS Sports. A lot of fans that didn't know any better thought that this was the right thing to do. 30,000 signatures later, the fans made their message clear.
Fans started sending countless emails to the AD demanding Pearl's re-hire. The Athletic Director Dave Hart never fully came out in support of Martin, so that perpetuated the situation as well. In the meantime, the boosters who control the planes that Martin used for recruiting and travel pulled their access for those planes to show their disdain for what Martin had done.
Dumpster. Fire.
This is where things get dicey.
-Martin and the Vols ended up winning out against Miss St, Vandy, Auburn, and Mizzou. In the meantime, other bubble teams started slipping. Tennessee went from the Last Four Out to The Last Four In. They beat a HORRIBLE South Carolina team in the SEC Tournament and that seemed like enough to make the tournament.
-The Vols get into the tournament as the VERY LAST TEAM IN. It was a blessing for Martin and the Vols, but by this point the damage was done. The team rallied around Martin because the attitude was obviously "Us Vs The World." It was a good motivator for Martin and the team and he ended up turning things around.
-Right after getting into the tournament, Bruce Pearl heads for Auburn. I don't think that the timing was a coincidence.
The sidewalk fans that signed the petition started sending apology emails to the AD, writing open letters of apology on UT boards and blogs, and calling in to radio stations to show support.
Tennessee beat Iowa in overtime to make it in. Then they beat an outmatched UMass, and a Mercer team that had just downed Duke. By this point, the fan support had completely swung back in the other direction. Tennessee fans are a bipolar bunch, honestly.
In the next game, they lost to Michigan by way of a charge call in the final ten seconds. it was a brutal way to lose, but it was a loss nonetheless. I remember reading posters on this board talk about how questionable the coaching was for that game though. There were still a lot of people, fans or not, that didn't understand Martin's approach in crunch time. This was the mark of his career at Tennessee, the intentions were there but the finish was not.
After the tournament, it was almost a foregone conclusion that Martin was gone, given his treatment. After he pulled his name from the Marquette job, it looked like maybe he had committed to UT, fans be damned. I never heard about racist activities, and I would have jumped all over anyone on any board that started throwing slurs around or implied something like that.
Overall, the situation is horrible as a fan. The negative publicity and having the Pearl thing blow up in the face of the administration is horrendous. I'm embarrassed but hopeful at the same time.
